Our residents consider our didactics to be one of the many highlights of our program. In the video below, listen to Dr. Shinar describe the comprehensive and innovative didactics and ABIM board preparation program.
The program pays for board review resources for all graduating residents; residents have significant input into which resource is supported by the program, through the housestaff council. Examples of previous resources include the ACP Board Review Course and the Awesome Board Review program.
More information about our board prep resources can be found here.
Our residents rate our Academic Half Day curriculum as one of the great strengths of our residency.
The whole program joins together each week for three hours of dedicated, uninterrupted learning.
During this half day, attendings carry your pagers and care for all patient issues so that you have 100% protected learning time.
We hold our "morning report" conference at Noon to ensure residents are able to attend after completing key morning patient care duties, and so we call it "Resident Report" instead.
Held 3 times per week (Mon, Wed, Thurs), and occurs at both Banner University Medical Center Phoenix and the Phoenix VA.
Led by our chief residents.
Senior residents on the inpatient wards rotations present recent cases in an interactive way, and relevant MKSAP questions are included to enhance the learning.
Attendings also contribute to the conference with advice from prior experience and to help teach clinical reasoning and decision-making.

Robust advising and rotation opportunities will help ensure your personalized clinical schedule optimizes the medical education and patient care experiences that will set you up for success in your intended future career, whether that is hospital medicine, primary care, or subspecialty fellowship.
In addition to traditional IM subspecialty rotations, we have a robust offering of additional unique rotations and electives that will help you tailor your residency experience to your specific interests and needs.
PIE Certificates recognize significant interest and commitment to learning about a topic that is supplemental to the core training curriculum. They are led at an institutional level to facilitate cross-specialty engagement in areas that align with individual career goals and interests.
All residents & fellows from our GME programs are invited to apply for any of the certificate programs.

New intern boot camps, rising PGY-2 boot camps, ICU simulations, etc.
For residents in the Primary Care Track and all those in the Categorical Program who are interested in a career in ambulatory medicine.
Residents have multiple opportunities to learn and practice ultrasound and procedure skills:
POCUS Curriculum:
This program is a part of select wards month and is based on the American College of Physicians POCUS curriculum.
Residents have protected time for hands-on training in one organ system (i.e., lung exam). The diagnostic exam months are planned to ensure a comprehensive POCUS training over the course of each year.
Procedure Team at BUMCP:
Residents rotate through this hospitalist-run team in one-week intervals during their EM and select non-call elective months.
Multiple rotations throughout residency and one-on-one teaching from trained ultrasound attendings promotes excellent ultrasound and procedural skills in paras, thoras, LPs and lines.
Advanced POCUS Elective:
Dedicated elective, during which residents complete the ACP POCUS modules, perform U/S-guided procedures, and have dedicated time for POCUS scanning to build a personal portfolio.
Residents on this elective check out and use a program Butterfly probe and iPad for use.
Wards, ICU and Outpatient Clinical Care:
At both BUMCP and the VA, residents have ample opportunity to perform procedures and POCUS with appropriate supervision.
Multiple butterfly probes are available in the resident team rooms in the hospital.
