Students also create documents in multiple genres, implementing the techniques they have developed in Writing 1 & 2. Courses may engage a substantial amount of discipline content. However, substantial class time and assignments must be devoted to writing instruction.
Writing 3 courses are expected to use and reinforce the lexicon of writing terminology developed in the preceding writing courses. Instructors of Writing 3 courses may expect that students enter their courses with an understanding of effective writing processes, an ability to do library research in order to find supporting materials, the ability to accurately document sources in at least one citation style, the ability to craft lucid prose consistent with grammar and spelling conventions, and familiarity with multiple academic writing genres.
This course will reinforce and build upon information literacy competencies developed in Writing 1 & 2 (selection of topics; determination of type of information needed; search tools and techniques; evaluation of information and sources for authorship, relevance, and currency; importance of citations; avoiding plagiarism; subject-specific databases; and discipline-specific citation styles) by providing instruction in the following:
Instructors are encouraged to consult with a librarian for additional resources on information literacy.
This course is the third writing course in the General Education sequence at APU. The preceding course categories are Writing 1: The Art and Craft of Writing and Writing 2: Genres, Evidence, and Persuasion. It is recommended that Writing 3 be a required course in the major at the junior (recommended) or senior level.
Enrollment may not exceed 22 students.
In an attempt to establish and encourage a consistent vocabulary of writing and rhetoric terms across the university, thereby allowing for more transferability of writing skills between courses in all disciplines, instructors in this course will make use of a shared list of writing terms and definitions available in the Writing Program lexicon.
