Writing 1

The Art & Craft of Writing

Writing 1: The Art & Craft of Writing introduces students to the content of the field of writing studies, which treats writing as a historically based, culturally influenced phenomenon worthy of research and academic engagement. In this course, writing itself is the content. Students will learn about writing studies—which includes writing processes, literacies, genre, and multi-modal composition, among other topics—through engaging and analyzing the theory, studying the art and craft of writing, and producing their own texts.

One of the primary benefits of this course is the opportunity to read academic texts that encourage reading confidence and acumen.

And, because assessing and writing about any content aids in cementing the knowledge for the writer, students in this course who read and write about writing studies will work toward improved writing skills on all fronts—rather than dividing students’ and instructors’ focus between writing and some other topic.

Writing 1 does not claim to teach students everything they will need to know in order to write successfully in college, because the knowledge, skills, and practice needed for students to become proficient writers is far too much to ask of a single course. Students need continued writing instruction and practice throughout their academic career. The Writing 1 course will also assist in the effort to foster a culture of writing at APU by providing a foundation, lexicon, and other tools to the community.
