Fraction Talks 

Fraction Talks are a specific type of Math Talk. Fraction  Talks are centered around classroom talk and scholar action.  In a Fraction Talk, the teacher projects an image on the board. The teacher identifies which shaded area scholars will be working with. The teacher then asks the scholars " What fraction is shaded?". Scholars then develop an answer with reasoning to support their thinking. Once scholars are done thinking, the teacher provides a space for scholars to share their thinking. As time progresses, teachers can shift the question being as asked to more challenging and thought provoking concepts. This can include examples such as Can you shade a section with twice the area? and Can you shade exactly one-quarter of the shape?.
