Manipulatives are hands on objects that scholars can be instructed to use to teach or reinforce concepts in mathematics. In order to allow scholars to develop a deep conceptual understanding of mathematics, scholars need an opportunity to manipulate physical objects when learning topics. This process allows for the develop of concreate understanding of the mathematics being taught. When planning lessons, it is important to provide scholars an opportunity to have these experiences. I've outlined a few of my favorite manipulatives along with resources and actives for your classroom.

Algebra Tiles are a set of square and rectangular-shaped tiles used to represent integers (or constants) and variables. They are a visual, area-based model in which the shape of each tile is related to the unit square and also represent various variables in Algebra
(such as x, y and xy).

As their name suggests, pattern blocks are used to create, identify, and extend patterns. Scholars use the many relationships among the pieces to explore fractions, angles, transformations, patterning, symmetry, and measurement.

Two-Color Counters (sometimes referred to as "Integer Chips") can be used to model Integers and Integer operations. When modeling Integers, the red side of the 2 color counters represents -1 and the yellow side represents +1.

Base Ten Blocks can be used to develop an understanding of the meaning of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Modeling addition on a place-value mat provides students with a visual basis for the concept of regrouping.

Fraction Tiles are a visual representation of fractions. They allow the user to compare various fraction sizes to the same whole. Scholars can also use the to compare different fractional parts and perform operations with fractions.

In middle grades, Cuisenaire Rods are an excellent tool for modeling ratios and proportional relationships. Students can also use the rods to create patterns and then describe those patterns using a variety of mathematical representations, including charts, graphs, and equations.

Patty paper is perfect for geometric investigations. You can write on the paper, trace, and see creases when you fold it. It's a great way to explore geometry from a hands-on, tactile approach.
