Estimation 180

Estimation 180 is an educational activity created by Andrew Stadel, a math educator, to help students develop their estimation skills in mathematics. The premise of Estimation 180 is to present students with a variety of real-world objects, scenarios, or situations and prompt them to estimate quantities or measurements associated with those objects. The goal is not to get an exact answer, but rather to develop a sense of number and improve estimation abilities.

Procedure:

Presentation: The teacher presents an image or scenario to the students. This could be a photograph of a jar filled with candies, a picture of a classroom object, or any other contextually rich image.
Estimation: Students are then asked to make estimations related to the image. For example, they might estimate the number of candies in the jar, the length of an object, or the weight of an item.

Discussion: After students have made their estimations, the teacher facilitates a discussion about the various estimates. This discussion might involve comparing and contrasting different estimations, reasoning about the size or scale of the object, and considering strategies for making more accurate estimations.
Feedback: The teacher may reveal the actual quantity or measurement associated with the image, allowing students to compare their estimations to the true value. This feedback helps students refine their estimation skills over time.
Reflection: Finally, students reflect on their estimations and the feedback provided. They might discuss what strategies were effective, areas where they could improve, and how estimation skills can be applied in real-world contexts.

Estimation 180 activities are designed to be engaging, interactive, and accessible to students at various grade levels. They promote critical thinking, mathematical reasoning, and number sense, all of which are important skills in mathematics education. Additionally, Estimation 180 activities can be easily integrated into classroom instruction as warm-up exercises, whole-class discussions, or independent assignments.
