Do the Math is Akron’s Tier 3 intervention program for students in grades 3–5. The program follows the High Dosage Tutoring (HDT) model to provide targeted, intensive support for scholars who need to build or rebuild essential mathematical foundations.
The purpose of HDT is to provide customized intervention time that strengthens prerequisite knowledge and skills directly connected to core, grade-level learning. By aligning intervention to what students are working on in the classroom, HDT ensures scholars have the foundation to access and succeed in grade-level content.
Students work in very small groups (1–4 students) with a teacher, paraprofessional, or trained tutor.
Tutoring sessions are embedded within the school day to ensure consistency and access.
Research shows that when an evidence-based program like Do the Math is implemented with fidelity—3 days a week, 30 minutes a day, for at least 10 weeks with groups of about 4 students—students demonstrate accelerated learning and measurable gains.
