Before each semester starts, you will see a variety of balances on your accounts and you will likely see multiple emails from Student Accounts telling you that you owe money. If it is before or in the first couple weeks of the semester, don't stress! Funds do not all arrive at the same time, so please be patient as updates to your account will happen occasionally. Before each semester and within the first couple of weeks, the Director of Financial Aid for ACCESS, Sheila Burleson, is working to pay off your bills and update your financial aid awards. If you get a bill after the first few weeks and are concerned, please forward it to your advisor so we can look into it for you.
Some students who have outside scholarships will receive a refund. If you receive a refund, it is yours to keep.
If you receive a refund, we recommend that you set some aside just in case later in the semester we find out your books cannot be covered (read more on the textbook page).
OFF-CAMPUS STUDENTS:
Off-campus students, if your financial aid is complete, you will receive a refund around the start of fall and spring semesters. The standard refund for living off-campus is around $6,100 per semester.
PLEASE NOTE: If you are expecting any type of refund AND you have enrolled in the University's health insurance (or not waived out yet), then your refund will likely be $a little over 1,000 less than what you expect. When Wendy pays for the health insurance in mid-September, you will receive the remainder of your refund.
If you do not have a checking account, now is a good time to start thinking about establishing one and setting up direct deposit.
A checking account is something you will need for years to come! Many banks have checking accounts specifically for college students and have no fees. You can check out info about BB&T's student checking, but there are many more banks with free student checking accounts!
Reasons to Setup Direct Deposit:
If you plan to work on campus, having a direct deposit setup will allow you to be paid the quickest. Paychecks will be sent to your account almost immediately on payday. Otherwise, you'll be mailed a check which could take days or weeks, and may be mailed to your home address.
ACCESS students often get refunds such as your $200 deposit for committing to App, scholarship funds, financial assistance, or housing reimbursement if they live off campus. Having a direct deposit setup will allow your refunds to be sent directly to your account rather than mailed as a check.
You need to complete the Payment Deferral Attestation in Touchnet before each semester. If is important to complete this ASAP to avoid class cancellations.
