As you are developing and finding solutions to your root causes, keep in mind research sources can be made up of reputable free websites, databases, eBooks, and print books. Your sources will vary depending on your problems and solutions. Below are some district and community resources that will help you use scholarly sources for your quality research:

The district pays for many of the databases the high schools use. Notice at the top of the Databases and eBooks page (linked above) is a link to all of the passwords you'll need. You will need to sign in to view the passwords with your school Google account. All of the databases will generate an MLA citation for you! Super bonus....

The next step for locating additional databases and eBooks should be King County Library. KCLS created accounts for all Northshore students to be able to access all of their databases, eBooks and audiobooks and additional digital services.

  1. Click on Middle, High School & College Students

  2. Scroll down to "Need Sources Such as Databases for Your Homework or Project?"

  3. Scroll down to select relevant databases: You might consider eLibrary, (magazines and news), Gale Academic One File (more scholarly), or ProQuest Research Library. Their Science/Technology focused databases are non-existent, but the research options above contain both science and tech publications.

  4. Once you've chosen a database to search, click on it and

  5. Sign in with:

      1. 417####### (your student number)

      2. password is the last four digits of your student number

  6. Most of the databases will allow you to email articles to yourself for reviewing later. You might also consider creating a Working Bibliography (a list of sources your MAY end up using.

Print Books: Both KCLS and the other high schools have Curbside service of print books. Search the catalogs and request what you'd like to check out. You do need a library card for KCLS, but for Northshore's collection you just need to make a request. The high school librarians are working out a way to support your print needs and we'll update this page as we have more information.

Citing Your Sources: Any source you paraphrase, or summarize, or direct quote needs to be cited, both within the text and in a list of sources at the end of your paper or project.

Northshore uses Noodletools to help students create their citations. You can access Noodletools three ways: Clever, the waffle of tools in your Drive, and at noodletools.com (sign in with your school gmail account).

Let's create a project in Noodletools today! Go to Noodletools and update your profile to include Innovation Lab as your school. Create a new project in MLA and junior level.
