LibreTexts Textbooks
LibreTexts is an OER creation and hosting platform. LibreTexts is a non-profit organization committed to freeing the textbook from the limitations and costs of traditional commercial textbooks. In order to build and/or remix LibreTexts materials, you need to request an account and understand the back-end of the platform.
Important Links:
Request a LibreOne Account - This will give you access to the project management tool (Conductor) and is required if you want a LibreTexts Instructor account.
LibreTexts Construction Guide - This is a LibreTexts that explains how to remix and/or create a LibreTexts book
Los Rios LibreTexts Campus Commons - This is a catalog of the LibreTexts contributed by Los Rios faculty
Navigating LibreTexts - A short video to help you and students understand how to utilize tools within the LibreTexts platform
Suggested Workflow
Request or Login to your LibreOne Account. If this is your first time, click the "Register with LibreOne" link at the bottom of the page. Once logged in, you will be in the project management tool known as Conductor. Conductor allows you to create a project, add team members to the project, and to track progress its progress. You can also request services (e.g. harvesting and publishing).
Plan your project. It's highly recommended that you spend some time in the planning phase rather than jumping in and editing a text right away. CRC has created a spreadsheet template that you can use to create your textbook outline:
Outline Template: MAKE A COPY! - LibreTexts Remix Outline Template - Make a copy of this in your own Google drive or download as an Excel file.
Video Instructions: Creating Your LibreTexts Remix Outline
Other resources: Watch Suzanne Wakim's (Butte College) 2022 webinar, Co-authoring OER in LibreTexts. Her slides are also available for review. Even if you're working on a solo project, this webinar gives great advice from someone who has created several remixed LibreTexts on how to plan and execute your project.
Important Notice for CRC Faculty: Once you have completed the first two steps, an OER specialist can build your project in Conductor/LibreTexts and then inform you when the editing phase can begin. If you'd like to use this service, please contact Andi Adkins Pogue.
Create your project in Conductor: Login to LibreOne and click the Create a Project link in the green heading bar at the top of the page.
Enter the title of your textbook
Set visibility (private recommended while you're building)
Click Create Project
Your project is now created. This page is where you can edit properties, and add team members (purple tab), along with other resources. You can also use this page to communicate with team members, etc.
Create your book: From the project page, click the Create book link in the green box.
Pick the appropriate library from the dropdown menu
Make sure the title of your textbook is correct
Click Create - You will get a "Project successfully created" message
Access the remixer: In the top menu, click More tools --> OER Remixer (see the LibreTexts remixer guide or the LibreTexts 101 and Beyond Canvas course to help with this step).
Use the outline you created in step 2 to build your textbook. During this process, it's recommended that in the top menu under "copy mode" you choose the Copy-Transclude option unless you plan to rewrite/edit every single page of the text that you bring in. You have the ability later during the editing process to fork individual sections/pages if you decide that substantial changes are needed.
When complete, click Save to Server (note you can come back to the remixer at any time and add or move chapters, sections, etc.
Begin editing your text.
If you're happy with individual pages as-is you don't need to make updates. If you want to make changes, you will "fork" the page so that you can now edit it.
If you have placeholders where you plan to add brand new content or if you're building your book from scratch, it's recommended that you create a template so that your material remains consistent. Suzanne Wakim (Butte college) discusses this step in her 2022 webinar.
Publish your text. When you're ready for the text to become published, change the settings to public. We will reach out to the LibreTexts team and have it moved to CRC's hub. Note: As the creator, you can edit the text at any time even once it's published and in CRC's library.
