VoiceThread(VT) is an online tool where instructors can create a collaborative space where students and instructors can can have an interactive asynchronous conversation about a piece of media using text, audio and/or video responses. Here are some ways you could use it in your course:
Syllabus Walkthrough - Instructor can post their syllabus and have student ask questions or make suggestions in the first week of the term.
Collaborative Discussion Forums - Students can respond to discussion prompts using voice, video, or text comments, creating more engaging conversations than traditional text-based forums. This works particularly well for literature analysis or case study discussions.
Peer Review Sessions - Students can upload their work and receive detailed feedback from classmates through voice comments, making the review process more personal and thorough than written feedback alone.
Virtual Field Trips - Instructors can create multimedia presentations of locations relevant to the course content, with students adding observations and questions as voice comments throughout the experience.
Visual Analysis Projects - Students can examine images, artwork, diagrams, or scientific specimens while recording their observations and interpretations, fostering critical thinking and analytical skills.
Group Presentation Building - Teams can collaboratively create presentations where each member contributes different sections through voice narration, creating a cohesive final product.
Captions in VoiceThread - please note, there are two caption buttons in VoiceThread. The one at the top of the page will turn captions on for you, the one on an individual thread will allow you to edit your captions.
To get started using VoiceThread in Brightspace, you need to find the Assignment, Discussion or Content page where the instructor has set up VoiceThread for you. Clicking on a VT link in a Brightspace course will create your account and take you to the exact individual VoiceThread, assignment, etc. that you need.
To begin, log into Brightspace FFthrough AUDirect. Go to the course where you will need to use VoiceThread, and find the place in the course the VoiceThread is located (i.e. in Lessons)
In order to set up your Antioch VoiceThread account, you’ll need to submit your first and last name, as well as your Antioch email address in the box that looks like this:
Once you have done so, the page will refresh and you will be taken to the VoiceThread. Use the guides below and your instructor’s directions to complete your assignment.
Although it seems counterintuitive, you need to put a VoiceThread link into Sakai before you can create an account. Please see Step 1, Creating a VoiceThread Link, for instructions. Click on the link you’ve just created. You’ll need to submit your first and last name, as well as your Antioch email address.
Navigate to your course.
Go to the Content area of the course.
Click “Add Existing Activities”, and select “VoiceThread” from that menu.
This will launch the VoiceThread Setup Page. Proceed to the instructor support page for details about what comes next.
Assignment Builder gives you some more options, and allows you to connect your VoiceThreads to your Sakai gradebook in one step. This is the second most commonly used option, but it has some limitations! Assignment Builder assignments are self-contained: they can only be viewed through the specific assignment link.
*Individual VoiceThread creates a VoiceThread link that takes you and your students to one particular VoiceThread, and is the most commonly used option. *AT recommend using this option in most cases.
Course View creates a VoiceThread link that takes you and your students to a page that displays every VoiceThread linked with that particular Sakai course. This is useful for sharing student presentations, among other things. Note: Course View will not show VoiceThreads submitted through Assignment Builder. If you have imported course content from a previous course, it may appear under Course View for you and for students.
VT Home Page creates a VoiceThread link that takes you and your students to that user’s particular VoiceThread home page. This is the least commonly used option, because each person’s VoiceThread home is different, and is specific to that person’s course enrollments. Students will see VoiceThreads for all of their courses here. You will see any VoiceThread that is related to any course you’ve used VT in, except for Assignment submissions.
