For the purposes of this module, I define self care as a set of strategies that individuals can take to reduce their own symptoms of stress, burnout, apathy and/or exhaustion. It is important to realize that self-care is only one part of a healthy teaching and learning environment. There are many factors that are out of our control and no amount of self-care can offset a toxic culture, unreasonable expectations, a lack of support from your department, school, or organization or other outside influences like a pandemic, a nationwide racial reckoning, an environmental crisis, increased gun violence and political upheaval.
