FRENCH I

This is a novice-level course designed to introduce students to basic elements of the French language and culture. Students will learn everyday communicative vocabulary as well as the sound system, structure, and basic grammatical concepts. Information about daily life in France and Francophone countries is integrated thematically throughout the course. Students will develop their proficiency using the 3 modes of communication: interpretive (listening and reading skills), interpersonal (speaking and writing skills), and presentational (speaking and writing skills). Authentic language and cultural materials will periodically be used to allow students to integrate their learning into day-to-day life. 

FRENCH II

This course is a continuation of French I. Students will expand upon their vocabulary acquisition, increasingly relating concepts to their daily lives, while making comparisons between their culture and that of France and other Francophone countries. They will also be introduced to more highly developed sentence structure and complex grammatical points which will slowly be incorporated, along with the vocabulary, into more communicative activities.  Students will develop their proficiency using the 3 modes of communication: interpretive (listening and reading skills), interpersonal (speaking and writing skills) and presentational (speaking and writing skills). Authentic language and cultural materials will be used with more frequency to allow students to integrate their learning into day-to-day life.

This course continues to build on what was learned in French I and French II.  Vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure will expand upon previous topics at a more in-depth level, including the introduction of multiple new verb tenses.  Students will be expected to incorporate previous knowledge into their communication skills with more frequency, through activities such as more complex reading passages, longer writing assignments and ever-increasing use of French in the classroom. Cultural topics will still be related to daily life in France and Francophone countries, but will also begin to delve into other areas such as art, history and literature. Students will develop their proficiency using the 3 modes of communication: interpretive (listening and reading skills), interpersonal (speaking and writing skills) and presentational (speaking and writing skills). Authentic language and cultural materials will be used on a regular basis to allow students to integrate their learning into day-to-day life.

HONORS FRENCH IV 


Full year or 2nd semester only, following Intermediate French I - CCP
Credit: 0.50 credits each semester

Prerequisite: Successful completion of French III

This course is designed for those students who wish to expand their French studies beyond the basics introduced in levels I through III. Students who are high achieving, have a strong interest in world languages, and are college-bound will benefit from this course.

Prerequisite: Must have completed French II; Meet College Credit Plus Requirements and be admitted to BGSU.  BGSU only requires two years, but it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that students complete French III before enrolling. However, a university may not consider this course as a 4th year/level of the language. It is the student’s responsibility to confirm year/level with any prospective university.)

German III offers students a bridge from the novice to the intermediate level of proficiency in German.  Students are introduced to the remaining elements of basic vocabulary and structures in the German language, while challenging them to comprehend and communicate about more challenging topics. Using more complicated materials, structures and vocabulary students will develop more skills in all modes of communication: interpretive (listening and reading skills), interpersonal (speaking and writing skills) and presentational (speaking and writing skills).  Students will be introduced to simple stories, videos, poems and articles in the German language, some authentic, as well as material created by Germans for foreigners learning German.

This is a college preparatory course that familiarizes the beginning Spanish students through the fundamental building blocks in four key areas: listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. Students master common vocabulary terms and phrases; learn to comprehend a wide range of grammar patterns; initiate and continue simple conversations; respond appropriately to basic conversational prompts; analyze and compare cultural practices and perspectives between the United States and other Spanish-speaking countries. 

Students will be regularly assessed in proficiency within the 3 modes of communication: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational. Daily participation is necessary.

The first semester reviews the tenses learned in Spanish I and II, expands on vocabulary, and intensifies the fundamentals of grammar study. All four basic skills will be used: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Compositions and short stories in the Spanish language will be used.

Second semester reviews and adds complex tenses. The fundamentals of grammar study intensify in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Compositions, projects, and short stories in the Spanish language are included. Culturally relevant material continues to be incorporated in the class.

During this course, students can consistently perform in the Novice High range while more abilities emerge and develop in the Intermediate range.

 This course targets high-achieving students who have a strong interest in world languages and cultures. It is designed to develop students’ proficiency at the intermediate level.  Students must bring together vocabulary, structures and information acquired earlier to build greater facility in all modes of communication. Students are expected to increasingly use the target language in class.

Authentic language and cultural materials from various Spanish-speaking countries are used throughout the course.  These include:  short story, art, poetry and novel.  The emphasis of the course is the development of skills in all areas of the language.  Thus, the basics of grammar are reviewed, however, the primary emphasis is on developing facility with the language.  With further preparation, the AP Spanish language exam can be taken in May.
