Courses at Anthony Wayne High School are taught on a semester basis. A student must earn a “D” or better for the semester to earn credit. If a student passes one semester of a year-long course and fails the other; they will receive credit for the semester they pass.

Students are expected to maintain positive academic standing in order to continue in Honors/AP courses. Academic standing in these courses will be evaluated by the building administration. It is highly recommended that a student maintain a “B” each semester to move to the next level Honors/AP class.
The teacher will contact the parent/guardian if a student’s grade drops below a “B” in an Honors/AP course.
If extenuating circumstances such as, but not limited to, prolonged illness, family emergency, etc. exist, the teacher, school counselor, and building principal may meet with the student and a parent and allow them to remain in the Honors/AP class on a probationary basis.
HomeBase is a required course for all students. Homebase is an initiative to help us meet the needs of our students in an alternative way outside of traditional school class time. This time is intended to be used to develop intentional, individualized, and professional relationships with our students while mentoring the career exploration process. In addition, this time can be used for various needs within student populations for academic needs, extracurricular, and club/activity needs.
Determination for graduation will be based on a student’s cumulative grade point average at the end of the 7th semester.
• Summa Cum Laude
With Highest Honor – 4.5 or higher GPA
• Magna Cum Laude
With Great Honor – 4.0 to 4.49 GPA
• Cum Laude
With Honor – 3.75 to 3.99 GPA
• Scholastic Honors
3.5 to 3.74 GPA
Students may not retake a course that they have previously taken and passed.
Required courses that are failed should be repeated during the summer when possible. Failure to make up a course in the summer may ultimately delay graduation. Students must consult with their counselor to develop a credit recovery plan.
A student who retakes a course that they have failed or received a grade that does not allow them to advance to the next level has the option of filing a petition to remove the failing, or lower of the two grades, from their grade point average on their transcript.
The following guidelines apply:
The course must be retaken within 1 calendar year.
The transcript adjustment form must be submitted during the semester following the completion of the course.
Any course that is taken through College Credit Plus may not be removed from the transcript by state law.
A course that is failed due to disciplinary action (expulsion, suspension, or non-credit) may not be removed from a transcript except at the discretion of the high school principal.
No more than 2 courses may be removed during a student’s high school career.
Once a course is removed, it may not be returned to the transcript.
If a student does not fill out the form, both courses will be calculated into a student’s GPA, and fractional credit will be awarded for each course.
Students who successfully complete high school courses while in junior high are granted high school credit. Credit will be awarded and calculated in cumulative grade point average upon entrance to the high school. Students may elect to retake a course taken in junior high. A student who retakes a course that they have failed or received a grade that does not allow them to advance to the next level has the option of submitting a transcript adjustment form to remove the failing, or lower of the two grades, from their grade point average on their transcript.
Semester grades are calculated using an average of weighted quarter grades and a weighted finals grade. Each quarter grade is weighted 43%., and the finals grade is weighted 14% to calculate the semester grade.
Cumulative grade point averages are calculated only at the end of each semester. Class rank is updated at this time.
In line with the AWLS District Mission and Vision to empower students to be future-ready, AWHS values preparing students to take grade-level and course-appropriate performance assessments each semester. Whether students are preparing for their sophomore year in high school, preparing to attend college at the end of high school, or attending a work-credentialed program at PENTA, all students will be expected to take and complete a final competency assessment as a part of their future-ready journey. We believe that our students will benefit from their preparation for their next steps by taking a “final” in the courses for which they are enrolled.
AWHS believes students can prepare and engage in the learning process to achieve competency and thrive on a “final” assessment in any given course. Thus, we empower our students to be future-ready learners for any “final” assessment they may see in college, the trades, or the military.
