This course is designed to expose students to basic music concepts using MIDI, Digital Audio and multimedia applications. Garage Band, SoundTrap, and iMovie are studied, as well as an online course through ShedTheMusic. Students will compose and create their own compositions using classroom software, as well as create radio commercials, podcasts, and film scores. Students will be able to use the knowledge from this course to create their own music videos, podcasts, and even short films!

This course is a study of rock and roll music, beginning with its origins in ragtime, bluegrass, jazz, and blues, and continuing forward with the development of rock music into contemporary rock and its many offspring genres, such as rockabilly, country, disco, punk, heavy metal, soul, R&B, pop, grunge, rap, etc. We will travel through the decades, learning about the various waves of rock music and what made each unique, as well as studying the most influential bands of each decade. If you're looking to learn more about one of the most popular and diverse styles of music, this class is for you!

Are you a soprano or alto who enjoys singing in a large group setting? Ciel Voix is the answer! Ciel Voix, French for "Voices of the Sky," is a treble ensemble that focuses on developing tone quality and learning to sing two, three, and four part music written specifically for treble voices. The choir will sing many styles and genres of choral music with minimal rehearsal time outside of class. Because Ciel Voix is a performance based class, there is little if any homework and very few conflicts with other school activities or sports! Students will be eligible to audition for state, regional, and national honor choirs individually! The students will also be able to take part in the OMEA District 1 Solo and Ensemble Competition. Each semester offers two performances. In the fall semester the choirs will put on a Fall Concert and a Winter Concert. In the spring semester the choirs will perform at the OMEA District Contest and will put on a Spring Concert. Attendance at performances is mandatory. Although the class is offered for one semester, students are encouraged to sign up for the entire year!

Symphonic Chorale represents some of the best vocal students at AWHS and is designed to sing a variety of styles and genres of music at an advanced level. Students will be eligible to audition for state, regional, and national honor choirs individually! The students will also be able to take part in the OMEA District 1 Solo and Ensemble Competition. Each semester offers at least two performances. In the fall semester, the choirs will put on a Fall Concert and a Winter Concert. In the spring semester, the choirs will perform at the OMEA District Contest and will put on a Spring Concert. Because Symphonic Chorale is a performance-based class; there is little if any homework but there may be additional performances, rehearsals, and field trips. Attendance at all performances is mandatory! Admittance into Symphonic Chorale is by personal audition only. All Chorale students are highly encouraged to sign up for both semesters.

Close Harmony represents the best vocal students at AWHS and is designed to sing a variety of styles and genres of music, all a cappella! Students will be eligible to audition for state, regional, and national honor choirs individually! The students will also be able to take part in the OMEA District 1 Solo and Ensemble Competition. Each semester offers at least two performances. In the fall semester, the choirs will put on a Fall Concert and a Winter Concert. In the spring semester, the choirs will perform at the OMEA District Contest and will put on a Spring Concert. Attendance at performances is mandatory!. Acceptance into Close Harmony is by audition only and singers should possess a fine sense of pitch and tuning skills as well as excellent rhythm skills. There may be additional quizzes, both written and aural, designed to increase the musicianship of the singers. Close Harmony performs at all school concerts, as well as other field trips and performances all over Northwest Ohio and beyond. Join Close Harmony for a challenging, fulfilling, and fun musical experience!

CONCERT BAND

Grade: 9-12
Prerequisite: Students must be able to demonstrate at least an 8th grade level of proficiency on their instrument as determined by the director’s recommendation and/or audition.

All 9th-grade band members should enroll in this class.  The emphasis in Concert Band is a continuation of the fundamental playing techniques for the young musician.  Several styles of musical literature will be performed.   Concert Band activities will include concerts, festivals, and adjudicated events throughout the school year.  Attendance for performances and after school rehearsals is mandatory. Band members will be eligible to audition for Jazz, Pit, and Pep Bands.  Participation in Marching Band is strongly encouraged.  All Marching Band practices will occur in the summer (the last week in July and August) and after school during the first quarter.

Membership is achieved by formal audition. Symphonic Winds is the most advanced instrumental ensemble of the high school bands and requires excellent musical skills as well as individual practice. Many styles of musical literature will be performed. This band, along with the other bands, will function as the marching band for the first quarter.   Symphonic Winds activities will include concerts, festivals, and adjudicated events throughout the school year. Attendance for performances and after school rehearsals is mandatory. Band members will be eligible to audition for Jazz, Pit, and Pep Bands.  Participation in Marching Band is strongly encouraged.  All Marching Band practices will occur in the summer (the last week in July and August) and after school during the first quarter.
