Department Overview

Membership in FFA is provided for all students enrolling in one of these courses. All students will complete FFA related activities as part of the required coursework to align with the FFA mission statement of “making a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education. AFNR I Video

Animals, Food & Natural Resources (AFNR) I is designed to integrate scientific principles and new technologies to the animal and plant industries. Students will learn through hands-on activities the basics of food science, natural resources management, animal science & management, plant & horticultural science, power technology, and biotechnology. Leadership will be emphasized as students develop skills in parliamentary procedure, committee work, communication, public speaking, interpersonal skills, and teamwork. Additionally, students will learn techniques in woodworking and greenhouse management. Field trips to local businesses will further teach students these concepts. Students will apply knowledge of animal and plant science and natural resources to the agriculture industry. Students will engage in animal classification and selection, body systems, along with animal welfare and behavior. Students will learn principles of plant anatomy and physiology, and the role of nutrition, deficiencies and growing environment on plant production. Students will learn about the food science industry through taste tests and tensing consumer trends through marketing. Business principles will be examined along with the professional skills needed for success in these areas. Field trips to local businesses will further teach students these concepts.  In this course, students have the opportunity to earn an Industry Recognized Credential. Learner’s Mindset

Students will learn the components of business by developing a business plan, applying marketing and sales techniques, and identifying business structures.  Students will learn about leadership and management styles and the impact they have on business.  Students will learn that finance, career development, and human resources are important components of business management.  College credit is available to select colleges and universities. Students may also enroll in the Agribusiness Early Release class if they qualify and would like to gain additional credits and leave school early (schedule permitting) for working at a business.  In this course, students have the opportunity to earn an Industry Recognized Credential. Apply your class knowledge and skills in a real-life field experience, either paid or unpaid. Student class schedules will determine periods released from the school day to complete this experience. The minimum requirement is that you work 4 hours per week for every period that you are out of school. Site agreements must be secured by the start of the school year and be maintained until the end of the school year. Records will be maintained on the hours and activities/work completed. Visits will take place throughout the year to ensure the worksite is working with the student to help them receive the best experience possible. Students must have own transportation. Application is required. In this course, students have the opportunity to earn an Industry Recognized Credential. Students will apply knowledge of sheet metal fabrication (welding) along with identifying, diagnosing, and maintaining small air-cooled engines. Learners will also apply the principles of electricity, concrete, construction, and hydraulics. Students may also enroll in the supervised early release program if they would like to gain additional credits and leave school early (schedule permitting). If you love to eat or are curious to know where your food comes from and how it is made, this class is for you. Students will examine the science, research, marketing, processing, and packaging techniques applied to the development of food products. Learners will examine nutrient content and will examine and implement food safety, sanitation, and quality assurance protocols. Field trips to related businesses will further teach students these concepts. Students may also enroll in the supervised early release program if they would like to gain additional credits and leave school early (schedule permitting). In this animal anatomy and physiology class, students will study internal and external anatomical parts, their functions, and will investigate the relationship among these parts and systems within the body of animal. Throughout the course, students will apply the internal functions of anatomical structures to the business and industry principles of the animal industry. Students will also investigate animal genetics and how they impact the principles of animal improvement, selection, and marketing. Students will explore careers in animal sciences, and investigate business management practices of a veterinary clinic or animal facility and the economic design of starting a business. Field trips, projects, and activities will enable students to develop communication, leadership, and business management skills. Students may also enroll in the supervised early release program if they would like to gain additional credits and leave school early (schedule permitting). Apply your class knowledge to the laboratory setting through creating and conducting an agriscience fair project. Students will use this time to set up their project, collaborate with industry professionals, and use the agriscience lab to conduct their research. Additionally, students will have one-on-one help from a teacher to conduct their experiments. Students are required to present their research in the District 1 FFA and Ohio FFA agriscience fairs, which are both outsides of the school day.

Are you interested in leaving school early to shadow, volunteer or work in a setting related to your career interests? This program allows you to apply your class knowledge and skills in a real-life field experience, either paid or unpaid. It is open to juniors and seniors, and student class schedules will determine periods released from the school day to complete this experience. Site agreements must be secured within the first two weeks of school, and maintained through the semester. Students will maintain records of their experiences, and may eventually complete the Ohio Means Jobs Readiness Seal as a part of this experience. Visits will take place throughout each semester to ensure the host site is working with the student to help them receive the best experience possible. Students must have their own transportation.

This class is designed to equip FFA executive team members and upperclassmen with the tools needed to enhance their own leadership skills and styles.  Students will gain knowledge and skills in professional development, interviewing, and responsibility.  Students will gain teamwork skills and learn how to better influence others.  Finally, students will be able to work toward earning the Student Engagement Seal and the Community Service Seal.
