Introduction to Business is a practical introduction to the fundamentals of business. Students will learn about the world economy, entrepreneurship, business structures, and types, taxation, banking, personal finance and budgeting, and the stock market. The class will also cover the topics of business management, creating a business plan, developing a company, leadership development, and marketing essentials. Do you want to invest in the stock market? No better way than to buy and sell in stock simulations!

GLOBAL BUSINESS

Global Business is an introduction to globalization and the cultural economic, political, legal and corporate environments of business. Students will learn about global competition and the global marketplace. Cultural differences and corporate structures will be discussed. Money, banking, personal finance, and marketing are also learned in this fun and exciting class. Students will be able to research careers, and job prospects in various careers.

Students will be given a background of basic legal principles in both criminal and civil law. Topics to be covered will be determined by students’ interests. Topics may include the following: torts and civil law, crimes and criminal law, sexual harassment, contracts, marriage, divorce, renting/leasing, buying a car, owning a home, insurance, employment issues, domestic violence. Case studies and current events will give students the opportunity to see how laws help and protect people. Guest speakers and also a field trip to the Lucas County Common Pleas Court and Toledo Municipal Court will help to reinforce topics covered in this course

Ever watched the television show "Shark Tank" and had the interest to be one of the entrepreneurs on the show? This course is valuable not only to those individuals who are considering starting their own business but also to anyone who is or will be working in the business world. Students will experience the entrepreneurial process as if they were actually starting their own business. Students will have the opportunity to create their own businesses and collaborate with their classmates to build their own city and be involved in the plannning and physical layout of their city.

ACCOUNTING I

Accounting is the language of business. This course is designed to help you understand this language by learning the basic principles of the accounting cycle. Emphasis is placed on analyzing and recording business transitions, preparing and interpreting financial statements, and performing year-end closing duties. Learn how to find and read annual reports. Pull numbers from these reports to calculate ratios, which guide business decisions. Keep in mind that if you are planning on majoring in business in college, schools will require you to take accounting classes. Take accounting in high school to help prepare you for your future!

ACCOUNTING II

Learn about banking and payroll from a different point of view. Learn to compute your own taxes and taxes for a business. Investigate different accounting software programs. Explore a wide variety of careers in accounting including becoming a CPA. Also, learn how criminals have manipulated the system to personally gain profit from illegal activities like the Ponzi scheme. Study other scandals like Enron and see why SOX is now mandated by the government. Field trips and guest speakers will most likely be included. Take this to help prepare you for your college classes and business world!

SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT MARKETING

Sports and Entertainment Marketing is a unique and innovative course designed for students with an interest in the sports and entertainment industry. Marketing strategies along with topics in sponsorship, pricing, marketing research, endorsements, and promotions will be covered in the course. Students will apply the concepts taught in this class and participate in a simulation where they will create their own expansion sports franchise. This class will help to prepare those students that are interested in pursuing a sports management degree in college which could lead to careers as agents, brand managers, digital video editors, director of stadium operations, director of ticket operations, director of fan engagement, fundraising/development, stadium or arena hospitality, public relations, sales, social networking, sponsorship coordinator, sport camp director/manager, and sport communications to name a few.  Students will have the opportunity to listen to guest speakers and attend a career day with the Toledo Walleye and Mud Hens.

Do you want to learn how to budget your finances, manage your checkbook, and other real-world topics and financial applications? If you answered yes, this is the class for you. Regardless of the career pathway you choose, you will need to know the ins and outs of personal finance to be successful. Banking, interest computation, investments, buying products, sales tax, personal taxes, purchasing on credit, using a credit card, loan amortizations, payroll taxes, overtime computations, net pay, gross pay, depreciation, and even insurance are covered in this class. Learn these life skills before you find yourself out in the real world all alone!

HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM

Enjoy going out to eat? Enjoy traveling? Then this is the class for you! Explore the hospitality and tourism industry from the perspective of a business owner. You will learn how the four sectors (food and beverage industry, travel and tourism industry, lodging, and recreation and entertainment) of hospitality and tourism contribute to the U.S. economy by focusing on customer service. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the U.S. economy to add 1.9 million jobs in leisure and hospitality from 2021 to 2031. This class will expose you to possible career opportunities in this industry. Projects in this class revolve around creating and designing your own restaurant as well as planning your own vacation.

As a student in fashion merchandising, you will learn about the fundamentals of product development, manufacturing, market research, and branding. The multiple factors such as the cost of materials, quantities, and branding that affect the pricing of merchandise will be explored.

This course is a continuation of DECA I and will provide you with a more in-depth and application-based study of marketing including marketing strategy planning, marketing communications/advertising, marketing research, product management, personal selling, pricing, channel management, and entrepreneurship.

Potential career paths for program completers could include but are not limited to accounting/finance, advertising/public relations, business administration, international business, entrepreneurship, fashion merchandising, hotel/resort management, sales/marketing, sports marketing management, and travel/tourism marketing.

Are you interested in gaining practical knowledge of the business world through cooperative work experience? While working at a part-time job, apprenticeship, or internship, students enrolled in this course will apply classroom knowledge, skills, and attitudes in a more comprehensive and authentic way. Through a partnership between the employer and instructor, students will work an average of 10 hours per week at an approved business experience (students provide their own transportation) where they will be evaluated on employability skills, progress on the job, record keeping, and assigned connecting activities and projects. Participating students may choose to do an amended day to meet the co-op requirements.
