For our main project of the year, we got to choose either entrepreneurship or building. Eva, Bo, and I decided to make a business and pitch an idea for homemade lip scrubs.
Purpose: The purpose of the entrepreneurship project was to learn how to work and regulate our own business successfully and pay off our loan.
Today, we did a shark-tank style pitch to Captain, Heather B and crew. We aren't sure if we got the money yet, but everyone asked great questions that were very helpful to to our business. We will find out if we got approved on Monday!
WE GOT APPROVED!!!! Today, we made a card for Heather and her class, then made a list of all the companies that might want to buy our product. Then, we drafted an email to them. After that, we started on our labels.
Today, we tested our labels to see if the color was too dark or light. The yellow was perfect, the purple was fine, but the red was too dark. We are going to redo the purple and the red to make better labels. Another thing that went wrong was that some of our design got cut off, so we are going to alter it a bit. but other than that, it was fine!
Today, we got the ingredients!! we also decided to add a fourth scent -- cucumber. we printed the labels and then cut our labels and started to label our containers. I would use the paper cutters and then We did this by putting our labels on packaging tape . I would then give the labels to Eva and she would cut them, then Bo would label the containers. the picture is of some of our honey coconut labels.
on Friday, we bought new mica powder because on the amazon website, it said the powder was lip safe, but when we got it, the warnings said to wash off immediately if it touches skin -- so we had to buy new ones. Luckily, this set had no warnings!
Saturday, we went to Bo's house and made the lip scrubs -- it was super fun to pipe the scrub into the containers!
Today, we made templates for our boxes and figured out how to arrange the scrubs so they would fit. We still have to make a bunch more boxes though!
Today, we finished our boxes and packed them up, 20 lip scrubs in each box and emailed a bunch more small businesses that we thought would like to buy our product!
Today, we emailed a bunch more people! We are going to go to Sweet Zola's and Flying M soon!
Today, we cut and labeled more containers! When we finished with that, we started to make seals. We are going to print more labels and put them on parchment paper to save them for next time.
We are presenting our business to the school board!! Since the meeting was at 6:00 and none of us were avaliable, we made a video presenting our entrepreneurship project.
What were the final results?
I am so happy with how our bussiness worked out, and hope to continue it outside of school
What do you know now that you didn't know when you started this project?
I now know how to make lip scrubs and how to be respectful when emailing/talking to other businesses.
What advice would you give to future students about this project?
I would tell them that it is OK to make mistakes! We had a few moments when it was hard, but we pushed through and it turned out great!!
What else would you like to try that you didn't have time for?
New scents, more variety of product, etc, etc.
What proof do you have that shows you learned the project’s purpose?
We made $175, paid back our loan, and had fun while we were at it!!
