ELA

In third grade, students shift from "learning to read" to "reading in order to learn." This is a dramatic shift, and students need to read at home EVERY DAY in order to make this transition smoother.

REPEAT: STUDENTS NEED TO READ AT HOME EVERY DAY.

We will periodically send out Scholastic order forms home in Thursday folders. If you would like to order books, send in money along with the order form or use the class code from the welcome letter your child’s teacher sent home to order online!

These are the skills we will work on in third grade:

  • Whole Group Lesson to focus on Reading Skills

  • Daily Independent Reading

  • Larger focus on Informational Text

  • StoryWorks Magazine and Scholastic News

  • “Just Right” Books

  • Cold Reads- at least 1 per 9 week grading period

  • Writing in paragraph form

  • Informational, Narrative, Descriptive, and Opinion Writing

  • Barebone sentences and Grammar

  • Cursive Handwriting

Resources:

Spelling words are given out on Mondays. In the event of a lost list, your student's spelling words can also be found on our class websites and the MLES Spelling website below.

Grammar - We put the Grammar Central website together to help parents understand how we teach grammar and parts of speech in 3rd grade at MLES. Students also use this site as a learning tool. Students can get additional practice at home with IXL (click to the Language Arts side) and No Red Ink.
