Tobias Funeral Home. Belmont Historical Society.
Tobias Funeral Home was founded in 1941 by LaMar Tobias and his wife Norma. They fulfilled their desire to own their own funeral home when they purchased the former Woodall residence at 648 Watervliet Ave in Dayton, Ohio. The family worked hard and provided caring services for the families of Dayton. As their reputation grew, so did the number of services. These increases resulted in the need for major additions to the Belmont chapel in 1949, 1955 and 1968.
In 1973, the family recognized that additional facilities were needed, but that further expansion of the Belmont chapel was impractical. They purchased a 4-acre tract of ground at the intersection of Dayton-Xenia Rd and Grange Hall Rd in Beavercreek and secured the services of architects and designers to create a state-of-the-art funeral home. Building contracts were signed in April of 1976, and construction was completed ahead of schedule allowing the first funeral service to be conducted in the new 13,000 square foot facility on December 20, 1976.
The business continued to grow and serve the needs of families from Dayton’s suburbs until the early 1980s when the need for additional facilities arose again. To fill that need, the Tobias family purchased the Hoyne funeral homes on Far Hills Ave and East Third St. Following extensive renovations, the two “new” chapels were ready to serve the families of the southern suburbs and eastern Metro Dayton areas in 1984.
For more than 20 years, the Far Hills and Third St. chapels have provided Dayton area families with the unparalleled level of service they have come to expect from Tobias Funeral Home. In an effort to provide their services to even more families, the Tobias family purchased the Carrigan and Mains Funeral Homes in Englewood, a northwestern Dayton suburb, in 2001.
We are continually working to improve and update our facilities for comfort and convenience. We’ve recently installed our own on-site crematory so we can provide those families interested in cremation with services which meet their unique needs. At Tobias Funeral Home, we are proud of our past – but we are looking toward the future.
