When Dot’s Market opened, food was rationed and very hard to obtain. Soap, Coke, cigarettes, sugar, salad dressing, candy, gum, bananas, canned fruit, coffee, butter and meat – so many other items that you can’t imagine today.
Building a new building was impossible, and there were no building materials available at the time. Rob Bernhard, Sr. purchased an old “temporary” Army barracks which is still standing on Patterson Rd today.
In 1951,he negotiated an agreement with Greenmount Housing Corp. to make use of the building that is still know as Dot’s Market on Watervliet at Patterson Rd.
