In 1905 , Herman H. Breitenstrater bought farm land. The H. H. Breitenstrater truck farm raised tomatoes in the summer and greenhouse lettuce in the winter. The neighborhood was all corn fields.
The 12 acre farm produced its last crops in 1949-50. The lettuce crop was picked for market that winter and the hot house tomatoes came in early spring of 1950.
The 1 acre greenhouse was then dismantled, and the transformation of farm land to a grand shopping center was underway.
In the fall of 1951 Breitenstrater Square was ready for occupancy. The family home was preserved and became an exclusive restaurant.
