Let us give praise for birds,
for the exaltation of horned larks chirping melodies as they search for seeds;
for the constellation of yellow-beaked starlings swiveling out,
swinging back; for the charm of hummingbirds buzzing and whipping away,
darting toward daylilies to the tune of rapid-fire chits;
praise for the kettle of hawks pirouetting their life and death gambol
as they loop and spiral and dive; for the parliament of owls
holding court on a branch, back from the hunt, gulping down the last mouse;
and give praise for the lone wedge of geese migrating north,
honking through the night as they journey home.
