Have you ever seen a picture like this? You may have seen similar pictures that use these outlines of people and some kind of action with it. Keith Haring was known for his use of color, shape and lines that illustrated movement and sound.
* What do you think the artist was trying to say in this picture?
*What emotions or feelings?
*Do you think the artist is showing movement in this piece? If so, what kind?
Keith Haring's style of work is considered POP ART. Many of you remember Roy Lichtenstein, the mural on my wall, Haring was also considered in this category...think about it, bright colors, dark outlines, bold statements...
How about this picture? What do you think is going on? What kinds of feelings do you think they are feeling? What kind of sounds do you hear? How do you know there is motion? What are your clues? See those little curved lines...like little pairs of rainbows? They show the arms and legs moving around, or the ball being hit by the feet (straight lines show something hit with force).
This picture, are they in an argument? or do you think they are happy to be together? What do you think is happening? Did they miss each other? or in a fight with each other? You decide and think what the artist was trying to show. What if I told you the title was called "Buddies", now what do you think? What about these lines around the people? Are they movement of being hit with force like the ball in the other picture or showing strong emotion?
Think of what action or emotion you want to create. Then use these steps in the image to draw your Keith Haring inspired picture. Don't be afraid to practice a few stick figures before doing a final picture. I think you all will like making these and I may drive the neighborhoods seeing chalk figures all over...just keep it appropriate :o) Make your own Pop Art, make it Pop!
