Tech Talk--Stay Safe--Step Away--Self Care

by Gracyn

As you know we are going through a global pandemic and we all are using our devices more than ever such as going on zoom meetings, doing assignments, looking on social media and many more things that we do online. But have you ever thought about how this could be affecting us mentally and physically.

Too much screen time can actually cause you to have strained eyes, dry eyes, headaches, and bad posture which causes neck, shoulder, and back pain. Another thing having too much screen time can cause is poor sleep and insomnia. Screen time can also make you perform worse on memory and language.

You may not know this but screen time can also lead to less self control, lower mental well being, less curiosity, hard time to finish tasks, less emotional stability, difficulty making friends and more distractibility. Some children that have more than 7 hours of screen time can experience brain thinning. A good amount of screen time for kids aged 8-18 should be just 2 hours a day while a normal 8-18 spends more than 8 hours.

Some of the benefits of screen time in moderation are texting, Face-Timing, calling, and shared video games are ways to socialize. Another reason why screen time is good for you in moderation is the education value of doing research, homework, and other school related activities.

Some parents take away their child’s phone at night while some don’t but actually parents should take their child’s phone at night and while they are doing homework so that they can sleep and do their homework without distractions.

Clearly the amount of screen time is very important for our mental and physical health, so I think we should all try to turn off our devices once in a while.
