Inspiring art work

by Kaelani H

Since I was little, I have been obsessed with the sun and moon and the whole zodiac signs thing. I would always hear about metaphors that were made around the sun and moon. It’s like if it was day or night I would always feel happy just by looking at the sky. I always make art that has the sun and moon topic and today will be the first time that I will put one of my art pieces in a place for people to see. I hope you like the art. This will be the last thing I put in the Beaver Bugle as I’m graduating in a few days. Another thing I would like to say is thank you to Ms. Mulholland for giving me the chance to put my work in a place where people can see it.

13th, a documentary

Ava DuVernay, director

by Zoha, 8th gradeThe movie/documentary “13th” is a brief history on the ways the U.S. government, lawmakers, and law enforcement subjugated and enslaved African Americans centuries after the end of slavery and decades after the end of Jim Crow and the Civil Rights era. It explores how using a specific loophole in the 13th amendment--“Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction”--has allowed the U.S. government to unfairly attack people of color. Because people can be forced to work if they have been convicted of a crime, the U.S. government has consistently used that as a way to get free and cheap labor from these individuals who are predominantly black and hispanic.I was surprised at how the agenda has advanced and I felt troubled this happens on a day-to-day basis in our country. I agree with the message that this system should not target African Americans in this manner and that this is a real problem in our society today which is not taken as seriously as it probably should be. Statistics show that African Americans have a 6 times higher rate of imprisonment than White Americans even though they get charged with the same crimes. African Americans also comprise only 12% of the drug-using population but represent 32% of those who are arrested for drug possession. So as you can see from all this evidence this is an issue, and we cannot let it fester forever and ruin lives and tear apart families. It is our job as a just society to do the right thing and try to do whatever will positively help society and all those parts of it.

Geri's Game

by Jonathan“Geri’s Game” is a short film created by Pixar is about an elderly man named Geri who plays a game of chess, but get this, he’s playing with himself. This film is set in an empty park, probably in the middle of Autumn. He takes turns of the chess game by moving out of his chair, going to the other side, moving for that side, vice versa. We can differentiate each “Geri” by his glasses either on or off which he takes off or on in each turn, or when his personality changes which one Geri is cocky and the other one is scared. At the end of the film, one of the Geri’s who is losing the chess game fakes a heart attack and falls to the ground, which the other Geri looks under the table for him. The Geri that faked a heart attack gets up and flips the entire board, then soon wins the game, which the prize was a set of dentures. In my english class, we were asked to watch this short film and write about the multiple symbols and literary devices that were in the film. Some theories can say that Geri resembles two different people, however, some people disagree and say that it’s only one person, rotating back in forth. In one shot, we can see one hand moving a chess piece and the other Geri in the back, which can mean that there’s two different people. But, in the end of the film, the camera zooms out to reveal that he is alone.
In my opinion, this film is not the best film nor the worst. However, we do have to include that it was created in 1997, which makes it a classic. It was awarded the “Best Animated Short Film” of the year. It wasn’t that very entertaining to watch at first, however, it sparks a lot of ideas and theories. The simplicity in the film is what makes this film interesting to watch, and the aspect of him playing alone as two different characters is what makes this film great. Geri faking a heart attack could resemble “cheating death.” while when Geri flipped the board could resemble “flipping the scores” and to never “give up.” /10 film.

"suh-top!"

by Jonathan“Suh-top!” is a chapter within a book titled, The Gangster We Are All Looking For, by a Vietnamese author called, Lê Thị Diễm Thúy. This chapter is about a young Vietnamese girl who immigrated from Phan Thiet, Vietnam to San Diego, California with her dad named Ba and four uncles. In America, she has to adapt and adjust her life in an unfamiliar country with different cultures. She goes through a journey of staying at a boy’s house named Mel and describing her life experiences at the house, school, the mountains, etc. The major event is when she finds this glass disk with a butterfly trapped inside of it. She believes that it is her job to free it, thus, she throws it at a glass cabinet and breaks everything in Mel’s office. This concludes with the Vietnamese refugees being kicked out of Mel’s home.In my English class, we were asked to create a google slide project on the symbols that hide within the story, and how that impacts the plot by analyzing the text with context clues. The major symbol was the butterfly, which we had to answer the question, “Why did the girl throw the butterfly disk?” There were multiple answers, but a good amount of people said that she threw the disk because it resembled herself, trapped in an unfamiliar place with different cultures, similar to how the butterfly is trapped inside the disk. There were also other symbols, such as the seabirds, the white paint, the snowy mountains, the glass animals, etc.
Jonathan Le - "suh-top!" Symbolism Project
There are so many different elements and clues that are presented in this chapter, and one of these important elements was the idea of “white.” A few of these being the idea of being surrounded by white culture and people resemble the snowy mountains and the idea of being white-washed resembles the white paint. The overall plot was this experience of the girl with different cultures and different ideas where she feels trapped. She feels so trapped and claustrophobic that she is forced to throw the butterfly disk to free the butterfly, just like how she tried to free herself from America. This is only a chapter of the whole book, which the plot keeps moving forward with the girl trying to escape. 8/10 Chapter.
