Year 7 & 8 Students use the design process to research and evaluate existing designs and through technological practice go about producing a Bag Tag or an item of Adornment that represents them as an individual factoring in their cultural background and/ or personal interests. During the process they gain an appreciation of aesthetics and functionality as the main principles in their design task.
The manufacture of their prototype incorporates the use of a variety of hand tools with a major emphasis being on the production of a quality outcome. Research, Drawing Modelling and experimentation are all used to formulate a successful outcome which is then in turn evaluated for its Functionality and Aesthetic values and attributes.
The students are also exposed to a range of materials so they can gain an understanding of the differences between various materials when manipulated and the differing physical qualities or properties they have when they are engineered into useful items. For example:
Year's 9 & 10 Materials Technology incorporate Design and Manufacture scenarios that are cross curricular or promote integrated learning opportunities whilst also focusing on the production of quality outcomes.. There is also where opportunity arises, a focus on the unique aspects of New Zealand's culture where students can design outcomes with Maori Culture and/ or Kiwiana in mind.
