This course is a two term project that you take in Year 7 OR 8.
The students spend most of the first term learning how to set up machines and learn the skills necessary to make the bag they have designed. The design component of the course requires the student to think about what sort of bag they might need, they need to think of as many ideas as they can and then choose their best four to draw. The next task is to get some feedback on their designs and use at least three ideas to improve their favourite concept. Their final design needs to include a pocket, a fastener and a logo. Most students have never used a sewing machine before so the first skill they learn is threading up the machines and learning how to sew a straight line. Once they have mastered this they might need to learn how to make a pocket, sew on a zip or velcro or how to put on a logo. As soon as they have completed the skills bank tasks they have a term to make their bags they have designed. This course gives basic skills in design and machine work which is very useful if you choose this as an option in Year 9.
