This course is designed for students with an interest in Computer Science, website design and scripting, robotics, electronics, digital design, animation and game development. The course is preparation for a large student-driven digital project in Y10. Students spend the first few weeks learning to script a website using HTML and CSS. They then move on to design and code an animation using sprites and Javascript in code.org. Finally, they can choose to cover the basics in sensors and circuits, robotics, app development, Photoshop, video production or electronics and programming with an Arduino. The course would suit any student who wishes to 'upskill' in programming, web scripting, algorithm and electronics through a series of fun online courses. This short two-term course is knowledge and skills based. It does allow student driven choices about the design, programming, scripting and final assessment activities submitted.
During Y9 students will
Learn HTML and CSS
Learn how to animate sprites
Program sprite movement using Javascript
Design an interactive animation
Choose what digital project they would like to work in.

Digital Technologies is a University Approved subject
These courses are designed for students who wish to develop their digital skills in any Digital Technologies area.
In course A we cover the basic curriculum knowledge required to be successful at NCEA level 1. Students learn about the Internet and how data is transmitted using binary sequences. We also improve on the coding and scripting skills started in Y9 and students create their own multi-page website or an interactive game. Once the basics are covered students can choose any short digital project
In course B, students create a digital product of their choosing. We follow the structure of the NCEA Technology assessment tasks offered in Y11 at most other secondary schools. Students develop a brief, learn project management skills, collect and analyse stakeholder feedback whilst they develop a digital outcome of their choice.
This is 'modular' course so within the outlines there is a lot of flexibility for students to choose what they would like to learn and make this relative to Digital Technologies NCEA level 1. Please contact me debra.wood@ajhs.school.nz if you want further information.
Digital Technologies
Students will:-
Understand how data travels over the Internet and what the implications of Big Data and AI are.
Understand an NCEA assessment and rubric
Complete a mock NCEA assessment
Learn basic Technology planning skills
Use project management tools
Deveolp a brief
Evaluate the outcome
Create a digital product of their choosing (program, animation, game, video, app etc)
It is highly recommended that students have completed the Y9 Digital Technologies course. If students did not complete Y9 they will need to upskill during term 1, in HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
