At the American International School of Johannesburg (AISJ), we are committed to providing exceptional educational experiences that empower students to fulfill their future purpose. To prepare our students for a rapidly evolving digital world, we intentionally integrate generative AI tools to personalize learning, boost creativity, and develop ethical digital agency. We prioritize student safety, data privacy, and POPIA compliance above all else. Because AI technology evolves rapidly, we maintain a comprehensive, up-to-date AISJ AI Portal.
We ask all families to review this portal to understand the specific tools we use, our strict data privacy protocols, and our pedagogical 'Human-in-the-Loop' philosophy."

At AISJ, we emphasize a "Human-in-the-Loop" philosophy. This means that AI is used as a supplement to, not a replacement for, a student's own cognitive process. The final output always remains the responsibility of the student, and we require students to disclose and appropriately cite any use of AI in their assignments.
To ensure equity, safety, and a consistent learning experience, Google Gemini, embedded within our existing Google Workspace for Education, is our primary recommended and officially supported Generative AI tool. However, rather than providing a static list on this annual form, AISJ maintains a live, continuously vetted list of all approved AI tools. For the most up-to-date information on tool functionalities, data privacy practices, and educational applications, parents are directed to the [Tools and Resources for Students] and [Tools and Resources for Teachers] directories on the AISJ AI Portal.
Protecting your child’s data is our highest priority. As an institution operating in South Africa, AISJ strictly adheres to the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
Because we use the enterprise-grade Gemini for Google Workspace, this gives a closed-loop environment. Google does not use AISJ student or teacher data to train its public AI models, and student data is never used for advertising. During the annual enrollment process, you will be asked to review our IT Acceptable Use Policy, which includes granting permission for your child to access our secure Google Workspace tools, including Gemini.
