AIS Dot Day 2021

The Dot Day is a true example of the AIS library’s vision statement and its slogan “Wonder. Create. Connect.” Vashti, the main character of “The Dot '' (P. Reynolds), sparks the sense of wonder through her story of fear and later bravery. Students, being inspired by the book, had a chance to create their own artistic pieces of dots. Surprisingly, during those days of reading aloud, creation and dress up with polka dots occurred the simplest, yet the most beautiful moments of connection among students and educators. That’s the power and the goal of literacy – to bring people together!

“The Dot” is a very symbolic book which strongly promotes the idea of creativity and courage, the qualities necessary to kick off the year in a positive and hopeful way. Also, “The Dot” is about the great new beginnings so it perfectly fits the start of the school year. It is celebrated around the world with huge enthusiasm because of the simplicity of the story which reaches the hearts of the little ones and endless activity possibilities which brings so much fun.  Older kids and adults can discover through the story that dots are metaphorical and that brings deeper reflections around the dot – ideas of putting small things together to create something bigger, not being afraid to initiate new projects, starting and trusting the process. "Just make a mark and see where it takes you."
