Drop Test
General Provision
A drop test is a method of testing the characteristics of packaging by raising the test package to a specific altitude and then releasing it.
In compliance with our standard operating procedure, it is mandatory for agents to perform the drop test on selected perishable and live shipments before proceeding with bookings. A drop test is compulsory in order to assess the fragility of the packaged items, which are susceptible to damage or leakage during manual or mechanical cargo handling.
A drop test must be carried out on packages that contain perishable items or wet shipments, including but not limited to Live Tropical Fishes (LTF), shrimps/prawns, lobsters and live crabs and worms.
For commodities with strong and pungent smells eg. durian and jackfruit, agents are required to send two samples:
One sample for inner and outer packaging inspection (Drop test)
One sample for smell test (results within 48hrs from the date of submission)
Drop Test Procedure (Step by Step)
Shipper requests for Drop Test appointment via email (maa_cargoops@airasia.com ).
Shipper prepares 01 sample with exact weight and packaging that will be sent for actual shipment.
Shipper must submit all types of packaging that will be used for the actual shipment.
Samples are to be submitted to the authorised Drop Test Team at each station.
The authorised Drop Test Team shall perform the Drop test process as per the guidelines:
Weigh the samples to confirm the weight (using weighing scale) submitted and the figures must be recorded in the dedicated database.
Drop the package from 0.8m and 1.2m height (to be measured accordingly), at all sides.
Record the type of inner and outer packaging material of each package.
Measure the outer packaging dimensions and thickness and inner packaging thickness.
Declare the results in the Cargo Evaluation Form (TLP/CGO/F/01), for each Drop Test submission. The result shall be updated in the Wet Cargo Approval Certificate database and if approved, Wet Cargo Certificate shall be generated, and shared with the Shipper, via the email.
Once the wet cargo request is approved, shipper shall upload the Wet Cargo Approval Certificate in Smart Kargo booking: epouch - Wet Cargo Certificate.
The Wet Cargo Certificate shall be printed and attached together with the cargo document during submission.
All generated Wet Cargo Certificate shall be retained in the dedicated Wet Cargo Drive for record purposes.

Smell Test
The sample of packaging sent for smell test must contain the actual commodity. Smell tests are required for any commodity that releases a strong and pungent smell such as (but not limited to):
Durian including any products containing durian paste
Jackfruit
It is recommended to use water-based ice or gel pack as a refrigerant or cooling agent. Dry ice is also allowed as a cooling agent, subject to aircraft limitation prior to MSDS approval.
