Egas Moniz (António Caetano de Abreu Freire), nasceu em 29 de novembro de 1874 na freguesia de Avanca, concelho de Estarreja, no berço de uma família aristocrata rural, e faleceu em Lisboa a 13 de dezembro de 1955. Foi um medico neurocirurgião , pesquisador, politico ,professor e escritor português .
O seu tio paterno mais o padre Caetano de Pina Resende Abreu e Sá Freire, insistiu que adotasse o apelido Egas Moniz.
Em 1911 foi transferido para a recém-criada faculdade de medicina da Universidade de Lisboa onde foi ocupar a cátedra de neurologia como professor catedrático. Jubilou-se em 1944.
Em 1950 é fundado, no Hospital Júlio de Matos, o Centro de Estudos Egas Moniz, do qual é presidente. O Centro de Estudos é, em 1957, transferido para o serviço de Neurologia do Hospital de Santa Maria onde ainda hoje existe.
Egas Moniz (António Caetano de Abreu Freire), was born on November 29, 1874 in the parish of Avanca, municipality of Estarreja, in the birthplace of a rural aristocratic family, and died in Lisbon on December 13, 1955. He was a neurosurgeon, Portuguese researcher, politician, teacher and writer.
His paternal uncle and Father Caetano de Pina Resende Abreu e Sá Freire insisted that he adopt the surname Egas Moniz.
In 1911 he was transferred to the newly created faculty of medicine at the University of Lisbon where he took up the chair of neurology as a full professor. He retired in 1944.
In 1950, the Egas Moniz Study Center was founded at Hospital Júlio de Matos, of which he is president. The Study Center was, in 1957, transferred to the Neurology service of the Santa Maria Hospital where it still exists today.
