Bexleyheath Academy Celebrates Phenomenal Results from Sixth Form Students

Sixth Form Students from Bexleyheath Academy are today marking a return to normality, with the first A Level and vocational qualifications results determined by their performance in exams since 2019. In the previous two years, students’ grades were decided by teacher assessment.  Bexleyheath Academy is celebrating phenomenal results from students, including:

Principal, Joseph Sparks, of Bexleyheath Academy said:

This year’s superb results are testament to the hard work of our students and staff. Students achieved highly this year and again we celebrate some wonderful results across all subjects within Bexleyheath Academy Sixth Form.

I have been delighted to see students celebrating exam successes and their excitement at their future prospects as all of the students look forward to university, apprenticeships and employment. I have been incredibly impressed by our students’ hard work and perseverance, and would like to thank our superb team of Sixth Form teachers. We wish all students the very best of success, we are so very proud of you all.

Rebecca Boomer-Clark, Chief Executive of AET said:

These are impressive, hard-fought results that will mean so much to these students. Despite the disruption the pandemic has caused, our students have dug in and shown enormous resilience and grit. It’s humbling to see what staff and students have achieved together and I can’t congratulate them enough. Aleks, Alfie, Amelia, Gustavs and Neelam have done particularly well, and I wish them the very best for their next exciting steps.

Schools Minister Will Quince said:

I know students across the South East – much like the rest of the country - have experienced disruption over the past two years, and they should all be immensely proud of what they have achieved.

Completing A Levels or vocational qualifications is no mean feat and the support students have been given by school leaders and teachers is invaluable. I hope each and every young person at Bexleyheath Academy who received their results today is now looking forward to taking their next step, whether that’s an apprenticeship or university, further training or the world of work  – but for now, I hope they are celebrating their achievements and feel very proud of their success.”

Students wishing to join Bexleyheath Academy Sixth Form in September 2022, can enrol from Thursday 25 August 2022.

Letter from the Principal

Dear Parents/Carers,

As we approach the end of the Academic Year, I find myself reflecting on the last 12 months and the significant milestones that we - staff, pupils, parents/carers, and the wider community - have achieved together.

1) Ofsted 'Good': In September this year, Ofsted published their report, confirming that Bexleyheath Academy is a 'Good' school. The Ofsted report spoke extensively about our pupils, stating that:

These comments fill me with a tremendous sense of pride, and I am incredibly proud of our pupils' achievements and their contribution to the Academy.

2) A Return to 'Normality': This year, the educational world started to return to 'normal'. This is the first time in three years we have been on-site for an entire academic year; it is the first time in three years our pupils have sat public examinations; it is the first time in three years that we have held a Summer Music Concert; it is the first time in three years we have run face-to-face celebration assemblies. Throughout the year, our students have demonstrated a remarkable sense of resilience and a real commitment to their academic work and the wider school community. I look forward to hosting more face-to-face events next year and opening our doors so our parents/carers, and the wider community, can gain an insight into what goes on behind the scenes.

3) The Academy of Choice:  Over the last 12 months, Bexleyheath Academy has become the Academy of choice. Since September 2021, over 180 new pupils have joined the Academy and have settled into life at Bexleyheath Academy. In addition, this September, we welcome over 300 new Year 7 students to the Academy; this significant increase in the size of Year 7 demonstrates our strong reputation within the community. I want to thank our parents/carers and the wider community for their continued support; I look forward to strengthening our relationship next year with the launch of the Academy Council and working together to take Bexleyheath Academy to the next level.

At the end of this term, we said farewell to a number of colleagues who are moving on to new ventures, including:

To all colleagues leaving us, I sincerely thank you for all you have done to support the students and your colleagues at Bexleyheath Academy; I wish you every success in your new role.

Finally, from everyone at Bexleyheath Academy, I would like to wish our parents/carers and pupils a restful summer. I hope the summer holiday provides an opportunity for our community to enjoy time with family, friends and loved ones.

Best wishes,

Joseph Sparks

Ukulele Club is a music club that is run by Ms Yeates every Tuesday Lunchtime, for students in Y07-09. Ukulele Club provides a good starting point for students who want to learn a musical instrument but do not know where to start. It is a fun and easy way for students to learn their favourite tunes, as the students get to decide what songs they would like to play. Ukulele Club is open for all abilities and by attending students will learn how to play different chords, eventually gaining the confidence and knowledge to perform a whole song. The Ukulele Club is currently learning ‘Billie Jean’ and is hoping to record and perform this song, ready to share with parents/carers by the end of this term. One piece of advice that the students of Ukulele Club have given is to ‘never give up and keep trying as you will only get better if you practice.’

A Message from the Principal, Mr Sparks

Dear Parents/Carers,

We are excited to welcome students back to the Academy on Monday 21 February 2022. As we enter Term 04, it is important to recognise and celebrate some of the remarkable achievements from the first half of this academic year.

At this midpoint in the Academic Year, our focus this term is Readiness: whether that’s supporting our Y11 and Y13 students as they prepare for their public examinations; supporting our Y11 and Y13 students as they prepare for the next stages in their careers; or ensuring that every student is ready to have a great experience, every lesson, every day.

We would like to thank our parents/carers for their continued support and high levels of engagement with the Academy. I would also like to personally thank the large number of parents/carers who have contacted me with their positive comments, thoughts and feedback. The sense of community at Bexleyheath Academy has never been stronger and I would encourage any parents/carer who wishes to speak to me to get in touch to share their ideas and feedback. Club Focus | Manga Mayhem

The following Latest News item was written by Sixth Form student, Max (Year 12).

Manga club is a club that has been created to celebrate and explore Manga and the Japanese culture from which Manga originated. Manga club is run by Art & Design Teachers Mr Glees and Mr Bahari, who both have an interest in Manga and anime. The club takes place on a Thursday lunchtime in C138 and is open for all key stage three students. Manga club is more than just watching anime or reading Manga, it provides students with a safe space for them to express themselves about a growing Manga market but also educate its members about Japanese culture.  Mr Glees and Mr Bahari started Manga Mayhem to create an appreciation for Manga and anime and to help remove the stigma that can be associated with this topic; this is done by allowing students to draw, play games, discuss anime shows and even watch anime together. One Y9 student said: “The club provides a non-judgmental place for us to gather and talk about what we like.”

Introducing You Series | Each week, we will be introducing parents/carers to different members of staff at Bexleyheath Academy. This week we will be introducing you to Ms Pressney. Our full collection of ‘Introducing You’ profiles can be found here.

Introducing You to Ms Pressney, Assistant Principal

Ms Pressney started her career as a PE teacher in 2004 when she joined Bexleyheath Academy, then Bexleyheath School. Ms Pressney is known by staff and students for her passion for sport, health and fitness. Even when the Academy was closed, during the two national lockdowns, Ms Pressney ensured that students could still lead healthy lives by posting a series of WOW (Workout of the Week) videos on YouTube. Ms Pressney joined the Academy with a range of experience from the fitness industry, including her work as a personal trainer. Helping others to reach their goals and improve their lifestyles has always been her passion and it was her experience as a personal trainer and fitness coach that made her realise that good lifestyle habits begin in childhood. With a vision to improve the wellbeing of young people, Ms Pressney decided to enter the teaching profession, and since then she has never looked back.

In 2013, Ms Pressney took on the role of Faculty Director PE, the first female to step into these shoes at Bexleyheath Academy. This role allowed her to introduce new strategies into the Academy, to help drive her passion for fitness and wellbeing. She introduced camaraderie to her team by using the ‘geese analogy’; teamwork, efficiency and equality, a value that still stands today amongst the PE Team today. Ms Pressney believes that all young people need positive role models and hopes to do this personally by continuing to be physically active, regularly taking part in CrossFit and karate. Her knowledge and experience of CrossFit has been passed onto staff and students with the introduction of WOW lessons. These lessons not only benefit students physically and psychologically but they also provide young people with the tools to be able to create their own workouts, to take through into their adult life. In 2020, Ms Pressney stepped into a new role as the Head of Sixth Form. This allowed her to work with a wider range of students and be able to support them during an important time in their lives; in 2021, Ms Pressney joined the Senior Leadership Team and continues to lead the Academy’s growing Sixth Form.

Ms Pressney said: “During my time at Bexleyheath Academy I hope that I have been able to inspire many young people and guide them towards leading a healthy lifestyle. Being part of a young person's development is very rewarding and I have enjoyed celebrating the highs and lows with the teams that I have coached. Sport unites people from all backgrounds and is a natural medicine for all. The students at Bexleyheath Academy have shown great resilience and this is something that makes me feel very proud to be part of their community. I know that they will now be able to take the skills and characteristics developed from their sport and apply them to their future endeavours.”

Mr Hill joined the Senior Team in January 2022 and is leading on the National Tuition Programme and staff professional development.  Before joining BA, Mr Hill worked at inner-city schools in London, developing resources and teaching strategies within an ‘outstanding’ English department as well as working with outside agencies to lead on BBC School Report, publishing student poetry anthologies and running a school BMX racing team to successfully compete at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Between working in London schools, Mr Hill worked at a high achieving International School in South East Asia, developing his teaching pedagogy and understanding of how technology can be integrated into the school curriculum to make learning as interactive, engaging and accessible as possible.

Mr Hill said ‘I have thoroughly enjoyed working at Bexleyheath Academy with an extremely talented, dedicated and caring staff body that aims to develop the abilities of all students. I have particularly enjoyed our transition of utilising technology within the curriculum to unlock the potential of all learners, regardless of their starting point. Our students have shown such promise in their adaptation to integrating technology into their more ‘traditional’ methods of learning and I look forward to helping Bexleyheath Academy continue to lead the way in this exciting area of school development.’

This Week's Updates from Bexleyheath Academy

Start of Term Arrangements for Week 02 | The Academy would like to thank parents/carers for their support this week; whether that was supporting children who were working remotely, or supporting our on-site testing programme.

The Academy will continue to operate a programme of on-site student COVID-19 testing as we enter Week 02.  All students will be invited to complete an LFD test on-site before they return to the Academy for face-to-face lessons, following a negative result. Students in Years  07, 08, 11, 12 and 13 have now completed their on-site tests and will return to face-to-face lessons on Monday 10 January 2022. Students in Years 09 and 10 will continue to follow the COVID-19 testing programme outlined in the table below. In order to further ensure that our return is as safe as possible, a second LFD test will be completed during this week as well.

Students in Years  09 and 10 will also continue to take part in their lesson remotely, except on the day that they are completing their COVID-19 test; this is to minimise disruption to learning and to provide students with time to prepare for their return to the Academy.

On the day of the test, students should arrive at the main entrance of the Academy at their allocated appointment time. Students are not required to wear their uniforms when attending the Academy on this day. Students will return home immediately after completing their test. When a student receives a negative test result, they will be able to return to the Academy to resume face-to-face lessons on the following day. Should a student receive a positive test result, we will contact parents/carers directly to explain the next steps.

Introducing You to...Series |  Each week, we will be introducing parents/carers to different members of staff at Bexleyheath Academy. This week we will be introducing you to Ms Seamons, the Academy's Medical Lead.

Introducing You to Ms Seamons, Medical Lead

Ms Seamons has worked at Bexleyheath Academy for 17 years. In her current role, Ms Seamons is the Academy’s Medical Lead. This role involves ensuring that staff and students are safe. She is the person to contact if: there has been a change in your child’s medical condition; your child is feeling unwell and you are unsure whether they should attend the Academy; or if you require an LFD testing kit.  You can contact Ms Seamons via email (nseamons@bexleyheathacadmey.org) or by phone 020 8303 5696 (Extension: 2188)

Ms Seamons has been leading our mass testing programme to ensure that all students can return to the Academy, safely and seamlessly.  Ms Seamons said: “I absolutely love working with the students at Bexleyheath Academy and my current role allows me to work with a wide range of students and ensure that each and everyone of them has the support they need to flourish both inside and outside the classroom. Bexleyheath Academy is a special place, and I have watched the Academy transform over the last three years. This really is a caring and big-hearted community, which places its students at the centre of every decision. While the last couple of years have been difficult for everyone, the team at Bexleyheath Academy has tried to ensure that all of our students can remain as safe as possible. In recognition of this, the DfE used Bexleyheath Academy as case study for their COVID-19 testing programme. One of my personal highlights was when Bexleyheath Academy was used for a photo shoot, to demonstrate what a safe Academy looked like; since then, my picture has appeared absolutely everywhere! I  absolutely love talking to people so if you have any questions about my role or your child, please do not hesitate to get in touch.”

COVID 19 Vaccinations | Young people aged 12 to 15 in England are now being offered a second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine at a minimum of 12 weeks from the first dose, following advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI). P0 sessions run from 08:00-08:40 and P5 sessions run from 15:10-16:30. These sessions provide an excellent opportunity for Y11 and Y13 students to plug gaps in knowledge, understanding and skills identified through termly assessments; to receive support and guidance as they complete coursework and to revise key content in GCSE/A-Level qualifications. Mr Courtney, Assistant Principal for Year 11, said: “Attendance at P0 and P5 sessions have been remarkable, and it’s great to see students at Bexleyheath Academy grab every opportunity with both hands. A Message from Claire Heald, AET National Director of Education

Dear Parents/Carers,

As we begin a new term at Bexleyheath Academy, we are very much looking forward to a safe and seamless return to the Academy for students.  We are writing to provide you with information about changes to the team at the Academy.

The following changes to the team take effect from 04 January 2022:

As we move into the next phase of school improvement at Bexleyheath Academy, we have been working to ensure that Bexleyheath Academy continues to improve at the rapid rate seen over the past two years.  We have made some changes to the leadership team at the Academy to further accelerate improvement in some key areas, and to increase the capacity of the team to further ensure that the sole focus for teachers remains planning, teaching and assessment.  This idea remains one of the key strategies to ensure that teachers are able to focus on the things that matter most; enabling students to have a great learning experience every day.  We are thrilled to announce two appointments to the senior team today:

In addition to this:

Working with our Trust to further increase the impact of improvements at Bexleyheath Academy:

We are really excited about the future at Bexleyheath Academy, with a determination to ensure that the Academy enjoys continued stable leadership for many years to come.  Our new team members enable immediate increased leadership capacity, and there are plans for further opportunities over the coming months to ensure that the Academy continues to thrive.  In particular, the way in which the educational approaches at the Academy have been transformed and shaped, using technology to enhance the experience for students.  This is something we are very proud of.

We know the school has come a long way in recent years and AET is committed to ensuring that this great work continues so the school can be an exceptional school for the community it serves.

Yours sincerely,

Claire Heald

AET National Director of Education

Start of Term Arrangements | Term 03 will commence on Wednesday 05 January 2022 with a programme of on-site student COVID-19 testing. All students will be invited to complete an LFD test on-site before they return to the Academy for face-to-face lessons, following a negative result. Students will also complete a second test once they return during the week commencing 10th January. Parents/carers were sent an email with the date and time of their child’s appointment on Saturday 01 January 2022. If you have not received an email with your appointment time, please contact our Medical Lead, Ms Seamons.

COVID-19 tests are scheduled so that all students from a single year group can undertake their test on the same day (see table below).

From Wednesday 05 January 2021, virtual learning will take place for all students that are awaiting their initial COVID-19 test. This means that all students are expected to attend their classes online from Wednesday 05 January 2021. On the date of the initial COVID-19 test, virtual classes for the affected year group will not take place to minimise disruption to learning. This will also provide some time for students to prepare for their return to the Academy.

Face Coverings & Hand Sanitiser | As we return to the Academy, we will be asking students and staff (except those exempt) will be required to wear a face covering at all times when inside the Academy.  This includes when students are in classes.  This approach is short term only, to support students as they return to the Academy this term and follows guidance published by the DfE. The Academy will continue to provide hand sanitiser at key locations around the Academy.  We would however recommend that students carry a small bottle in their bag, to use regularly.

Term 02 Progress & Attainment Reports | The progress and attainment reports for term two were sent to all parents/carers, with the exception of Year 11 students, on Thursday 23 December 2021. If you have any queries regarding your child’s term two report, please complete this online form and a member of the team will be in touch with you by Friday 07 January 2022. Year 11 parents/carers will receive their term two reports, including the mock examination results, within the next two weeks.

New Parent Portal & Daily Engagement Reports | The team at Bexleyheath Academy will be introducing a new Parent Portal smartphone app for parents/carers this term. The new app will have all sorts of functionality ranging from viewing student timetables and attendance information, checking daily engagement reports, and reviewing termly progress and attainment reports. As a result, parents/carers will no longer receive an email with their child’s daily engagement report because they will be able to view this report directly on the Parent Portal from 15:30 each day. We're looking forward to sharing more information about how to access the Parent Portal and how to download and register for our new app which will launch on Wednesday 12 January 2022, when all students have returned to face-to-face lessons.  In the interim, there will be no daily engagement reports while the Academy is operating a staggered return and virtual learning, from Tuesday 04 January 2022 to Wednesday 12 January 2022.

Term 03 Homework | Students in all year groups will continue to receive homework in each of their subjects (with the exception of core PE) each week. We believe strongly that homework has an important role to play in enabling students to make progress outside of the formal classroom lessons. Homework allows students to revisit content from lessons, increase levels of retention and enables teachers to check levels of knowledge and understanding. All homework will be set on a Monday morning, and students will have one week to complete the activities which should be submitted by the following Monday.  Where homework is incomplete, students will be required to attend the homework workshop which will take place each Tuesday from 15:15.

A Message from the Principal

Dear Parents/Carers,

As we pause for the Christmas term-break, it provides a good opportunity to reflect on the impressive achievements of students at the Academy over the last six weeks.  Our celebration assemblies that have taken place across the final week of term have highlighted the wide-ranging successes that students have enjoyed.  From impressive levels of engagement across the Academy, superb assessment results, and more students than ever taking part in clubs and activities.

I want to offer a huge word of thanks for your support during this term.  The level at which students attended and engaged in their learning has been very impressive, and this has relied on your support and encouragement every step of the way.  Similarly, your support of the Coronavirus testing programme at the Academy has meant that we have been able to operate safely.

At the end of Term 02, we said farewell to Ms Choudhury (Learning Support Assistant) who is moving on to a new position.  We thank Ms Choudhury for all that she has done to support students at Bexleyheath Academy and wish her the very best for the future.  As we move to Term 3, we will welcome the following members of staff to the team:

We will take a short break from our weekly updates, which will return on Sunday 02 January 2022.

On behalf of everyone at Bexleyheath Academy, I wish you, your family and friends a very pleasant Christmas break.

Regards,

Mr G. Napier

Musical Instrument Tuition at Bexleyheath Academy | At Bexleyheath Academy, we aim to provide the best possible musical education for every child.  Studies have shown that learning an instrument boosts brain development, IQ, literacy and numeracy skills as well as helping improve concentration and social skills.  Learning a musical instrument is a fantastic opportunity to develop key transferable skills as well as learning a life-long pleasure.  If you would like your child to learn an instrument this year, click here to find out more information about our programme of instrumental tuition and to register your interest.

OfSTED Inspection Report |  The report from the Ofsted Inspection at Bexleyheath Academy in July 2021 was published earlier this week.  In the report, inspectors have summarised the improvements at Bexleyheath Academy and made key judgements about how the Academy is performing.  Ofsted have confirmed that special measures have been removed from Bexleyheath Academy.  When inspectors visited Bexleyheath Academy in July 2021, they said that the way in which pupils work in school has been “transformed”, and that “there is a positive atmosphere in classes and around the school”.  Inspectors also said that the school “has completely changed” and have confirmed in their report that Bexleyheath Academy is officially a good school.  Click here to read more about the Ofsted Inspection Report.

Homework | Students in all year groups will receive homework in each of their subjects (with the exception of core PE) each week.  We believe strongly that homework has an important role to play in enabling students to make progress outside of the formal classroom setting.  Homework allows students to revisit content from lessons, increase levels of retention and enables teachers to check levels of knowledge and understanding.  Homework will be completed online from Monday 13 September 2021, and we will provide links to all homework activities within each student’s Google Classroom.  All homework will be set on a Monday morning, and students will have one week to complete the activities which should be submitted by the following Monday.  Where homework is incomplete, students will be required to attend the homework workshop which will take place each Tuesday from 3.15pm.

This Week's Updates from Bexleyheath Academy

Academy Day 2021-22 | The Academy Day will continue to provide students with four 80-minute lessons per day.  The timings of the Academy Day will remain unchanged from the previous Academic year. Students are required to arrive at Bexleyheath Academy by 08.40am (at the very latest) each day ready for their first class to begin at 08.45am.  To support students to improve punctuality, when they arrive late to the Academy, students will be required to attend a lunchtime detention which will take place on the same day.

Academic Support for Y11 & Y13 Students | Part of the provision we continue to provide for students in Year 11 and Year 13  includes a programme of additional tuition and academic intervention.  Whilst some parents choose to pay for additional tuition outside of school, this additional support will be provided by Bexleyheath Academy to all Year 11 and Year 13  students.  This will take the form of intensive, high-impact additional learning, intervention and tuition time with teachers and subject-experts.  A timetabled programme will continue in the autumn term and will take place during Period 0 (beginning at 08.00am) and Period 5 (beginning at 3.20pm).  It should be noted that these periods are not optional, and form part of the formal Academy Day for students in Year 11 and Year 13.  Period 0 and Period 5 classes will commence on Monday 13 September 2021.

Student Timetables | Students have access to their timetable for the coming Academic year, which shows their classes for each day, their teachers and the classroom.  Students can access their new timetable in their Google Calendar.  The timetable entries in the Google Calendar also provide direct links to all of our Google Classrooms where students can access all of their work.  We will also provide students with a printed copy of their timetable on their first day at the Academy.

Daily Engagement Reports | Our Daily Engagement Reports provide an indication as to how students have been engaging in their learning each day.  These daily reports will commence as students return to the Academy, and will be circulated to parents/carers via email at 6.00pm each day.  The daily emails will include information as to how you can contact a member of the team if parents/carers have any questions.

Homework will be completed online, and we will provide links to all homework activities within each student’s Google Calendar.  All homework will be set on a Monday morning, and students will have one week to complete the activities which should be submitted by the following Monday.  Where homework is incomplete, students will be required to attend the homework intervention workshop which will take place each Tuesday from 3.15pm.

Assessments & Reports | Over the previous Academic Year, parents/carers will have become familiar with our Assessment and Reporting cycle, and this will continue into the coming Academic Year.  All students, in every year group, will complete a formal assessment in Week 5 of each term, and we will report the results of this to parents/carers the following week.

Student Behaviour | We expect the very highest standards of behaviour of every student at Bexleyheath Academy.  Where a student’s behaviour does not meet the expectations of the Academy, the teacher will refer this directly to our behaviour team.  Ms Devler (Head of Lower School), Mr Courtney (Head of Upper School) and Ms Pressney (Head of Sixth Form) will work alongside Ms Luthfa (Vice-Principal) to make all decisions related to consequences following poor behaviour. They will work with our team of Pastoral Managers to ensure that we contact parents/carers in the event of a student being removed from class, and then again the same evening with any follow-up information.

Car Parking at Bexleyheath Academy | Bexleyheath Academy provides car park facilities for all parents/carers and Sixth Form students on the public car park accessed from Graham Road.  This provides a safe location for students to be dropped off and collected, avoiding the busy Woolwich Road at the front of the Academy.  The best postal code to use for this car park (if you're using SatNav) is DA6 7EG.  The Academy provide 15 minutes free parking for parents/carers so that students can be dropped off and collected safely, without the need to pay for parking.
