Suspense

Suspense:

Not to be confused with fear (as many horror genres employ the use of suspense), suspense itself has more to do with apprehension and anxiety or excitement generated over the unknown.

Example: "She couldn't wait any longer for his proposal; the suspense was unbearable."

or... "We gnawed our fingernails in suspense, as the actor slowly opened the door to the dark cellar."
