Simple Sentences

A simple sentence is an independent clause (IC), which has a subject (the thing or

person taking the action) and a predicate (the action being taken by the subject).

Remember... a subject must be a noun, and a predicate must be a verb.

Examples:

1- Dave threw a puppy at the Kraken.

(Subject=Dave) (Predicate=threw)

2- The monkey caught the puppy before the Kraken could.

(Subject=the monkey) (Predicate=caught)

Note: No matter how long the sentence is, it is a fragment if one of these two elements is missing.

Examples:

1-The gigantic monster, with numerous sharp teeth and great claws.

(No predicate=fragment)

2- Ran wildly towards the beach, while flinging a sword into the surf.

(No subject= fragment)

Hint: Try reading your sentences aloud to see if they would make sense in a conversation.
