Informative Rhetoric

Rhetorical Triangle 1.pdf

Rhetorical Triangle: Consider elements like your speaker (Who delivers the message and who created the message)

The Subject (what the message actually is)

The Audience (Who the message is intended for. This will help decide your author's purpose)

Infomercials: A commercial that is used to give information about a product to the consumers. While all commercials are intended to persuade consumers to buy their product, what they are really selling is an IDEA or MESSAGE. Infomercials attempt to come across as persuasive, as they aim to "inform" the customer on why their product is superior.

Exercise: Watch the two infomercials above and answer the following questions:

  • What information is presented?
  • What patterns do you see in how the information is presented?

Now apply the rhetorical triangle (find the speaker, message, and audience), and answer the questions again. What do you notice? How have your answers changed?

Practice: Use the Rhetorical Triangle for notes, during the talk. Afterwards, identify the Central Idea and Main Ideas from the video.
