Week 4

This week, our Eagles continued on the Entrepreneurship Quest visiting Competition and Substitute Island. On this island they learned about competition and substitutes by playing the Acton Academy Network game Virtual Lemonade Stand where they simulated a lemonade stand with 2 competitors and had to change their product weekly over 10 weeks. On Monday, we did the Sandwich Assembly Line where our Eagles discussed assembly lines versus individuals making an item and then put it into practice with 2 teams facing off making sandwiches. We had 2 Eagles run Quality Control for the sandwiches and keep tally of the score. For the first 10 minutes the teams earned a point per minute of hard work with a point taken away for each sandwich that did not meet quality control; for the second 10 minutes, the teams earned a point for each sandwich made with a point taken away for each sandwich that did not meet quality control. After these 20 minutes our teams met back up and talked about their strategy and decided if they should switch strategies. The last 10 minutes mirrored the previous 10 minutes with a point given per sandwich and a point taken away for each one not meeting quality control. It was a very close race and almost 100 sandwiches were made! On Friday, we began the preparation process for our Exhibition with prototyping and booth design.

During Writer’s Workshop this week we began with peer critiques on Tuesday and self-critiques with A.R.M.S. (add, remove, move, or substitute) on Thursday. Next week, we will finish the editing process and then publish these memoirs into bound books for each Eagle to take home.

This week during Civilization we visited 1700 B.C. and learned about the Babylonians and 1800 B.C. to learn about the Assyrians. We read from the epic of Gilgamesh and thought about our own stories and what we would want to be written about ourselves one day.

In athletics this week, we played sharks and minnows and had fun being outside in the nice weather. We also have a group who are learning cheers and motions created by one of our Eagles!

The biggest highlight this week was when Chad Zunker, founder and creator of BabySusher, visited our studio and chatted about coming up with an idea, creating a product, and taking it to market with our Eagles. He brought multiple prototypes and gave our Eagles some great ideas and inspiration as they began the prototyping process!
