Week 3

This week, our Eagles continued on the Entrepreneurship Quest visiting Unit Economics and Hiring Islands. On Unit Economics Island, they looked at what the items used to make their products cost per unit, how many are used to make 1 unit of their product, and what the costs are to make 1 unit. Here they learned about sunk costs, variable costs, and fixed period costs. On Hiring Island, they played an Acton Academy Network game called RoboRush where they were the owner of a company that made different robots. They went through the simulation making robots, hiring employees, and ultimately building a factory that made only one type of robot. They learned a lot about the cost and benefits of hiring employees and growing.

During Writer’s Workshop this week we continued writing the drafts of our short stories that will eventually become our Memoirs. This included drafting about a special place you love to go and drafting about a special day you remember. We heard stories about Colorado, Elgin, birthdays, and more this week and cannot wait to share them with everyone!

This week during Civilization we visited 2300 BC to learn about the First Sumerian Dictator and the Early Jewish People. We discussed city-states and their leadership and how they handled conflicts between one another. We also learned about King Sargon and the King of Kish and how they eventually battled. On Thursday, we switched gears from learning about a leader who led by force and learned about stories of leaders who didn’t force their way into leadership positions but who ended up there because of their abilities and circumstances.

In athletics this week, we played capture the flag! In art, we continued knitting this week - with multiple Eagles learning the knit stitch.

This week culminated in the giving out of 4 badges to 4 different Eagles - one each for Level 1 Spelling and Grammar, Level 1 Reading, Level 1 Writing, and 2 Level 1 Learning to Be Badges. We also celebrated Jack’s birthday with strawberry cake!
