This week, our Eagles continued on the Entrepreneurship Quest visiting Market, Identity, and Unit Economics Islands. On Market Island, they looked at who their target market would be and what they would look like. On Identity Island, they thought about their company’s identity including their name, color scheme, and culminating in designing their booth. On Unit Economics Island, they looked at what the items used to make their products cost per unit, how many are used to make 1 unit of their product, and what the costs are to make 1 unit. Here they learned about sunk costs, variable costs, and fixed period costs.
During Writer’s Workshop this week we began writing the drafts of our first short stories that will eventually become our Memoirs. This included drafting about a time when nothing really happened and drafting about eating unusual things. We heard stories about time after school, nights at grandparent’s houses, things eaten off of airport floors, and more this week and cannot wait to share them with everyone! Some Eagles struggled with the idea of writing about a time when nothing really happened, but they were helped along by the mentor text Nothing Ever Happens on 90th Street by Roni Schotter.
This week during Civilization we visited 3200 BC to look at the First Writing on clay tablets and eventual creation of papyrus out of reeds. We had discussions on whether people alive on Earth today care more or less about leaving records of their experience than the early Egyptians and Sumerians and talked about whether these early people were brilliant or if the inventions of writing on clay tablets and paper would be invented eventually no matter what - spoiler alert we were pretty evenly split! On Thursday, we visited the Old Kingdom of Egypt in 2700 BC to look at making mummies and the great pyramids. Here, we discussed if we would rather be embalmed as an Egyptian King and given a great burial or feed our starving people. We also had a very interesting discussion about King Cheops and put ourselves in the shoes of an Egyptian person deciding if we would rather steal from the King’s tomb knowing it would prohibit his afterlife (that in this scenario we believe in fully) or kill a person alive on Earth. The discussion started with most saying they would steal because it is the “less severe” sin, which allowed me to remind them that according to the Bible, all sins are equal as they all cut you off from God. This brought about an interesting change as most Eagles then began to head towards killing someone who had done bad things since the question did not say who you had to kill. It was a very interesting moral dilemma and brought about a riveting discussion.
In athletics this week, we focused on the indoor activity of yoga as it was a very chilly day outside! In art, we began knitting this week - a favorite art of Mrs. Carla. The Eagles learned about different types and weights of yarn, materials needed for projects, and began by learning to cast on their first project, Fingerless Mitts, with the long tail cast on.
On Friday, we celebrated Halloween with treats and costumes worn by all. We spent about 30 minutes just playing, looking at everyone's costumes, and eating all the delicious treats brought by parents. The Eagles even created awards for different costume categories and held a vote!
This week culminated in the giving out of badges to 2 different Eagles - one for Writing Level 1 which is earned by completing the Free Writing Packet and one for Reading Level 2 which is earned by completing levels 10-12 of Lexia and reading and reviewing their first badge book. This Eagle chose to read and review The One and Only Ivan.
