Music

Congratulations on completing a crazy school year, 2019-2020, with a big THANK YOU to all our amazing Claxton students for a great year in our at-school and at-home music lessons. With the COVID-19 shut down, our school began transitioning into at-home learning the week of March 16, 2020. Below are some activities and websites for at-home music learning and music making. Feel free to explore them during summer break for musical fun and continued learning! Our Claxton Specialist Seesaw has been our main platform for online learning and will be shut down for the summer, but you can find some of the music activities that were there here below now.

I hope we can all be together again in August as a new school year begins, but if not, we'll continue to make the best of at home learning!

-Mr. Butler                                                                                                                                                                           Claxton Music Teacher

MAD LIBS SONG

Fill in the blanks with your own choice of words for the song to make it your own!

Oh, once upon a time there was a ________________________ (#1 animal),

Traveled all around the ________________________ (#2 place).

Made all the people feel ________________________(#3 emotion),

And put a big ________________________(#4 your choice) on every face.

One day a group of ________________________(#5 type of people) saw the ________________________(same as #1 animal),

And they couldn’t believe their ________________________(#6 body part),

They danced and ________________________ (#7 action) all the live long day,

And all ate a piece of ________________________(#8 type of food) pie!

And they sang, “Thank you mister ___________________(same as #1 animal), you sure made us all feel  ___________________(#9 emotion)!

We sure hope you’ll visit the ____________________ (#10 place) again, and join us in a game of ________________(#11 your choice).

Oh, join us in a game of_____________________(same as #11 your choice),

and you’ll surely bring a ______________________ (#12 your choice) to every face.

And we’ll all dance the_________________________(#13 type of dance) and sing about you ‘til the end of time.

Yes, we’ll sing about ‘til the end of time, with words that might not rhyme.

And we’ll play a tune on our ____________________________(#14 type of instrument) and then we’ll all feel ___________________________ (#15 emotion).

1. Listen to this great piece of music for some inspiration & see how many instruments of the orchestra you can recognize and name: http://www.viewpure.com/MW8asBxO4oI?start=0&end=0

2. Gather your materials:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    1) toilet paper or paper towel roll                                                                                                                                                                                                                      2) piece of tinfoil (wax paper or piece of a plastic bag will work too!)                                                                                                                                                          3) small piece of blank paper for artwork                                                                                                                                                                                                          4) tape or glue                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        5) rubber band                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      6) scissors, markers (crayons or colored pencils)                                                                                                                                                                                            7) something to poke holes in tube (a compass point or sharp pencil works -be careful!)

3. Measure out & decorate your paper cover. Measure out your paper by wrapping your sheet around the cardboard tube & marking where to cut, then cut out the size piece you'll need. You may want to make some extras in case you mess up on your first try. Using your markers, crayons, or colored pencils, make a design that will cover the kazoo. A bee design would be in the Claxton spirit, but you could draw anything your creativity desires. You could even glue on glitter or other crafty things.

4. Attach the tinfoil membrane or "whizbang." Cut out your piece of tinfoil, making sure it will be big enough to fit over the end of the cardboard roll then cover one end of your tube with the foil & fasten it tight with the rubber band. Try to get the foil across the top of tube to be wrinkle free as possible.

5. Poke holes in tube. With an adults help, poke two holes along the sides of the cardboard tube. A compass point, needle, thumbtack, sharp pencil, etc. can get the holes started. Enlarge the holes a little with a pencil or pen. It is okay to remove the tinfoil for this step and then reattach it afterwards if needed, just don't cover the holes over with the foil.

6. Attach you cover using tape or glue and start humming! Check out this link to another version of instructions if needed: https://www.upstartmag.co.nz/activities/make-a-kazoo
