Do you need a dramatic gift suggestion?
I've spent 15 years accumulating and testing out dramatic play toys. If your child loves "those string puppets" or "the googley eye hand things"...check out the list below. These make great birthday party gifts for friends also.
4th Quarter- Wrapping up the Year in Drama Class!
Kinder read 'The Way I Feel" and practiced acting out all the different emotions actors need to be able to show using masks & colorful scarves.
Kinder used Hobey Ford's Peeper Puppets to create silly eyeball characters.
For National Poetry Month we acted out "NOISE DAY" by Shel Silverstein.
Kinder read "I am a Frog" by Mo Willems- and created a paper bag puppet of either Gerald or Piggie!
Kinder read "The Squiggle" and used ribbon wants to represent lots of different shapes as we retold the story and explored the space.
First Graders used a Venn Diagram to explore costumes Vs: props and created our own original superhero or villian to present.
For National Poetry Month we acted out "EIGHT BALLOONS" by Shel Silverstein!
I worked with each First Grade teacher to select or create a "Cinderella" Reader's Theatre Script. Student have been rehearsing their scripts in drama and pulling together props, costumes, and making things to add to the show. We learned to hold our script at our bellybutton, face the audience, and let the Director be the voice in charge!
2nd Graders wrapped up their character lessons by creating their own paper bag puppet of a favorite (or original) character.
In collaboration with Music- students came up with their own choreography for the 10 minute musical "Tears of the Dragon". They worked hard and we are proud of their performance at the Spring Fling!
2nd Grade Paper Bag Puppets

They put their objective knowledge to good use- by writing a monologue from the perspective of an OBJECT...with an OBJECT-IVE! Students had the opportunity to perform their monologue for the class.
We enjoyed a "Trashbag Costume Challenge" and got creative...really fast!

"Best Day of My Life" by American Authors
Every year our 5th graders vote on a song to create a video for. They brainstorm what they want to be included and we work to film it together in Drama & in the mornings. We've also had a lot of time to play our favorite games...for the last time!
Phthalo & Her Dad did a puppet show for Ms. Martin's 5th Grade!

5th Graders being persuasive using different tactics
I’m a Raleigh born girl who is lucky enough to have found my home in Asheville since 2005. I always knew I was meant to be a teacher but didn't know where I would fit in. I tried on a lot of different subjects before finding drama. In the theatre I get to put my silly, big, enthusiastic personality in a literal spotlight! I graduated from UNC-Asheville with a degree in Theatre with a K-12 Teaching License in 2009. I crossed Merrimon Avenue and began teaching at Claxton a few months later. I added a K-6 Elementary Teaching licence, and taught 3rd & 4th grade for awhile, and am so happy to be back in the drama room.
As I start my 16th year at Claxton- my favorite part is still our HIVE community! I love being able to channel my enthusiasm into all of our traditions and events. My favorites are the school musical, 5th grade legacy video, school dances, storytelling festival, and our school wide Arts assemblies. As a teaching professional I'm excited for another year working with "Beekeepers" our Staff Culture team. As 'Claxton Teacher of the Year', I look forward to serving on our school improvement team and representing our school at the District Educator Advisory Committee for the next two years. Advocating for Claxton students, staff, and families is something I'm proud to be able to do!
When I’m not in my colorful room wrapped in costumes and using puppets... I’m at home doing the same thing with my 2nd grade daughter, “Maeve the Brave”. She is into Taekwondo, Science & Reading. My husband, Josh, is the Safety Officer for Asheville City Schools. GO COUGARS! When not at school I love reading, embroidery, trivia nights & board games, escape rooms, camping and buying more houseplants.
