Library

Welcome to the 2022 - 2023 School Year!

Meet Ms. Baily

I am so excited to join the CLX team! This is my tenth year as a media specialist and my second year in Asheville City Schools.

I love teaching research skills, getting hands-on with maker space activities, and integrating storytelling into lessons. I am a big fan of fantasy fiction and historical fiction and love hearing about the great books that students read.

I'm looking forward to building on the fantastic community of readers at Claxton and the wonderfully diverse collection of the Claxton Library.

Winter 2023

Special Events & Collaborations

The Library Media program supports student learning with special events and activities.

This Winter we've had classes come in for BreakoutEDU activities, hosted amazing storytellers as part of the Storytelling Festival, explored landforms with the Augmented Reality  Sandbox, supported a 2nd grade Book Club, and are preparing our 4th & 5th Battle of the Books team for a district-wide competition in the Spring.

        K | 1st | 2nd      Storytime

Weekly storytime visits with K - 2nd grade allow for access to books and opportunities to listen to beautiful stories for our youngest readers.

Kindergarten and first grade continue with library centers that focus on building love of reading, integrating the arts, and introducing technology and research skills.

First grade is also reading through the NC Children's Picture Book Award Nominees and will vote on their favorite in March.

Second grade is expanding their access to books by learning to use the online library catalog locating books on the shelves independently.

3rd | 4th| 5th Programming

3rd, 4th and 5th grade students have open Library time every afternoon to check out books. We host bi-weekly Passive Programs that students can participate in that focus on reading, building community, technology, and arts integration.

The Library Media program supports student learning with collaborative lessons with 3rd - 5th grade teachers that support research skills such as using databases, evaluating the accuracy of sources, and citing their sources.

Fall 2022

Special Events & Collaborations

An author visit, drum building residency, new bee hive...It has been a busy few months in the Library! This fall, we've been celebrating Hispanic Heritage month, book character dress up day, and indigenous voices from around the world. The media center is always buzzing with book clubs, reading groups, afterschool arts programs, and tutoring sessions - never a dull moment!

        K | 1st | 2nd      Storytime

We are kicking it into gear in the Library with interactive songs and stories, time to look for and check out amazing books, and interdisciplinary library centers for all students.

3rd | 4th| 5th Programming

3rd, 4th and 5th grade students have open Library time every afternoon. Most teachers use a rotating schedule so that students can visit once each week to check out books. We also have weekly programs that students can participate in that focus on reading, building community, technology, and arts integration.

Kicking Off the Year

The first 9 weeks in the library are all about students learning how to navigate and use the space. This includes becoming comfortable in the space, learning where things are located, and having a familiar pattern to visits so they know what to expect.

Classes will follow a predictable structure with a read aloud, reading activity, and time to choose and check out books. Lessons and activities with focus on skills for finding, selecting, and checking out books that students want to read. Skills from previous lessons will be reinforced with each visit. Once students are comfortable using the library we will expand our focus to talking to others about what we read and refining individual reading interests.
