Winter 2024 Updates
Kinder- Chicken Little
4th- Playwriting Performance
Kinder- Free Drama
4th- Elephant Pit Performance
Kinder students built their own body bubbles in a dramatic story, learned how not to be "Interrupting Chicken" and dove deep into acting out a story's PLOT. Stories have a beginning (like Chicken Little), a middle that we can change (like Little Red Riding Hood), and and ending that sometimes has a plot twist (like Neverwoof).
1st graders finished their study of plot by acting out "The Long Winter" and wondering how to change the ending of a book like "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus". We added sounds to stories and played the machine game. Between shortened snow days we played with costumes and marionettes.
2nd graders finished up Plot and launched into learning about Characters. We created tableaus (frozen silent pictures) that show character's relationship (how they know each other). We used masks to create conflict between animal characters. We created a sequel to continue the plot of "Sylvester and the Magic Pebble".
3rd graders created original fables using the same moral they studied about in class (Amos & Boris). Students invented the beginning to a mysterious fairytale they acted out. We read "Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day" and chose one of the main characters problem to COMPLICATE 3 times. We also worked on choreography to perform at the Winter Concert. We wrapped up the quarter doing a Coding Choreography project in the gym with Mr. Laporte.
4th graders acted out the stories "Elephant Pit" and "Li & The Dragon" with a reader's theatre script. Student's chose costumes and props to bring the story to life. We also worked on choreography to perform at the Winter Concert. Students did an amazing job writing 4- one minute plays with dialogue- and acting them out with a classmate.
5th graders came up with their own major dramatic questions to act out. Students did an amazing job writing 4- one minute plays with dialogue- and acting them out with a classmate. After their wordplay unit in Wit & Wisdom- 5th graders learned about idioms that originated in the theatre. They chose one to act out for the class.
Finding Nemo Jr turned out wonderfully. Our students worked so hard on this show and we were so glad to share it with our community!
Fall 2023 Updates
I had so much fun introducing our new Kinders to the drama room! We started the year with dramatic play centers- allowing kids time to explore the themes of - Camping, Airport, Sandwiches, Ice Cream, Birthday Party, Pizza Shop, and Doctor. We got familiar with the room, played lots of games together and learned how to share props and costumes. These play centers now live in their K classrooms so they can keep the dramatic play going. Next quarter we will be learning all about the PLOT & CHARACTERS in a story! We will read & act out a lot of stories, making stick puppets, using masks, and of course DRESSING UP!
2nd-5th Graders: We start every year off learning the expectations of the drama room, and roll into building our ENSEMBLE (a group of actors who work together)! We played a ton of drama games to build trust and practice procedures at the beginning of the year. We put all of this to the test with the drama room's favorite competition....THE THING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROOM! Students create a silent pantomime scene and then suddenly hit an invisible wall in the middle of the room! They choose an object from their scene and pantomime breaking through the wall with it...in a CREATIVE way! This is the best start to the year. The top three creative ideas earn free snack in the cafeteria!
If you are curious about this project you can watch my 2020 Virtual Learning Lesson introducing this to students!
All Claxton Drama Students spend Quarter 1 Learning a little more about PLOT- through stories, improv, open ended scenes, and creative storytelling. Each year we add on to our understanding from last year.
Kinder: PLOT is what happens in a story. It's the beginning, middle, and end.
1st: AND it's in a sequence of events that can't be out of order.
2nd: AND it should always have an interesting problem we are working to solve.
3rd: AND that problem can get more complicated.
4th: AND when the problem is close to being solved, the action PEAKS at the CLIMAX.
5th: AND the characters are pursuing the MAJOR DRAMATIC QUESTION!
69 Students have been staying afterschool to work on our After School Musical! Mr. Butler (music teacher) and I have a lot of fun working with the kids to put together the set, costumes, and choreography for the show. We can't wait to show it off on November 17th-19th for Claxton families.
I’m a Raleigh born girl who is lucky enough to have found my home in Asheville since 2005. I always knew I was meant to be a teacher but didn't know where I would fit in. I tried on a lot of different subjects before finding drama. In the theatre I get to put my silly, big, enthusiastic personality in a literal spotlight! I graduated from UNC-Asheville with a degree in Theatre with a K-12 Teaching License in 2009. I crossed Merrimon Avenue and began teaching at Claxton a few months later. I added a K-6 Elementary Teaching licence, and taught 3rd & 4th grade for awhile, and am so happy to be back in the drama room.
As I start my 15th year at Claxton- my favorite part is still our HIVE community! I love being able to channel my enthusiasm into all of our traditions and events. My favorites are the school musical, 5th grade legacy video, school dances, storytelling festival, and our school wide Arts assemblies.
When I’m not in my colorful room wrapped in costumes and using puppets... I’m at home doing the same thing with my first grade daughter, “Maeve the Brave”. She is my mini me, and loves being outdoors, all things science, and reading. My husband, Josh, joined me at Asheville City Schools- serving as our Safety Officer for the district and working with the Maintenance department. When not at school I love reading, embroidery, trivia nights & board games, escape rooms, camping and buying more houseplants.
