Running for office

*for even more info on running for office, check out this link*

**Nota bene: a chapter may not have any more than 4 candidates in an election**

Running for office is a great way to engage yourself in the WJCL community and effect a difference. If you're considering running, first check who is eligible to run to ensure you follow those rules.

If you satisfy eligibility requirements - great! Consider the roles of WJCL Officers and decide which role you'd like to fulfill.

If you have any questions, email the Parliamentarian at parliamentarian@wjcl.org. The Parliamentarian manages all voting procedures at State Convention.

THE PROCESS OF RUNNING AT STATE CONVENTION

Once you know you want to run, you must submit several forms by the December board meeting to the WJCL Parliamentarian at parliamentarian@wjcl.org. A specific time will be made available via social media/email, and you will be unable to run unless you submit by that specific time and date. All candidates will be announced at the December board meeting.(C5.1)

Declaration of Candidacy: This form includes your basic information, why you want to run for office, and signatures of yourself, your parent, and your teacher.

Candidates Code of Conduct: This form ensures that you follow certain guidelines and attend specific events at State Convention if you wish to run. See the document for specific information and read it carefully. Failure to adhere will result in your removal from the election.

Teacher Recommendation: This form reflects if your teacher/sponsor endorses you as a candidate for WJCL office.

(See what happens in the event of a Vacancy Election, which occurs when either 1) no one applies for a position or 2) a vacancy occurs in a spot due to resignation/impeachment/national office.)

At State Convention, you actually run. Keep in mind that you cannot campaign before the first GA (see a sample schedule of events here). Many candidates make creative posters to post in the hotel. You should attend the following events as a candidate:

  • MEET THE CANDIDATES: On Thursday night, delegates and sponsors can meet the candidates during this social event. You'll be asked questions and will have a chance to see what changes chapters want to see.
  • CODE OF CONDUCT MEETING: The code of conduct is reviewed during this candidates-only meeting on Thursday night.
  • SPEECHES AT GA: In reverse gavel order, you will deliver a 3-minute speech to the entire WJCL Convention.
  • CANDIDATES' LUNCHEON: This is a candidates' and current officers' only lunch. You can get to know your possible predecessor and other officers and candidates.
  • CANDIDATES' OPEN FORUM: There will be a panel of candidates being questioned in front of delegates from other schools and current officers. Candidates will be asked 2 questions: one serious one, and one funny one. Questions will then be opened to delegates.
  • FINAL GENERAL ASSEMBLY: The winners of the elections are announced.

You will take up your position 31 days after the end of State Convention.
