Trumbull, Jonathan

Born: Lebanon; October 10, 1710

Died: Lebanon; August 17, 1785

Jonathan Trumbull was the governor of Connecticut during the Revolutionary War.

He was the only colonial governor who supported the independence movement.

George Washington often called upon him to help support the soldiers fighting in

the Continental Army. Trumbull never backed down from Washington’s requests and

due to his efforts Connecticut provided the army with many needed supplies such as

beef, flour, clothing, and ammunition. These efforts led Washington to refer to

Connecticut as the provision state. Even today, Jonathan Trumbull is known as one

of Connecticut’s greatest leaders.
