On April 25, 1777, General William Tryon lands with 1,850 British troops at the mouth of the Saugatuck River on the Connecticut coast in what is now the town of Westport, CT. Their goal was to destroy military supplies stored 23 miles away at Danbury. Tryon's men marched to Danbury, where late on April 26, they burned over 20 houses, storehouses, and barns. Following the attack, General Tryon decides to return to his boats by marching through Ridgefield.

B. The Warning
In April of 1777, Sybil Ludington was the main "character" in an event that most probably saved many Patriot lives in Connecticut. In an attempt to warn the Patriot troops and farmers that the town of Danbury was being burned down, Sybil embarked on a 40 mile ride from her home in Kent / Patterson, NY.
