Howard, Nathaniel

Captain Nathaniel Howard (1745-1819) was born in Mansfield, Connecticut and moved to Windsor, Connecticut in 1772. He was an active sea captain, taking ships to the West Indies, Europe, and Great Britain and returning with goods to sell to Connecticut residents. During the American Revolution, he served as a privateer and was captured twice by the British. The second time he was captured, the British kept him on the Prison Ship Jersey in New York Harbor. Capt. Howard was released near the end of the war, and afterwards, he continued captaining ships until the 1790s. he then retired from the sea and opened a luxury goods tore in his home on Palisado Green in Windsor. He briefly served as Windsor's first postmaster from 1802 to 1804, a post that his son, William Howard, took over and kept until the 1850s.
