The Office of Teacher Education administers surveys to all initial and additional candidates. The NExT Common Metrics Surveys are conducted using surveys and protocol developed by 14 Teacher Education Programs in Minnesota and South and North Dakota as part of a 10-year grant supported by the Archibald Bush Foundation. The project ended in 2020. The MN Professional Educator and Licensure Standards Board (PELSB) and Educator Provider Programs (EPPs) have agreed that some Common Metrics Survey questions and candidate responses are to be reported annually as part of the state's Data Summary Report (DSR) to PELSB. See Jamie Utt-Shumacher for more details.
The surveys include:
1) Entry Survey (administered to initial licensure candidates only)
2) Exit Survey (administered to all licensure candidates when they complete the program)
3) Transition to Teaching Survey (administered to all candidates who complete the program one year into their first year of teaching)
4) Supervisor Survey (completed by employers of teachers after their first year of teaching)
Important information is gathered on program satisfaction and the candidates' and employers' beliefs in how well the program prepared the new teacher. In addition, the UMN Twin Cities cohorts can be compared to the cohorts at other teacher preparation institutions.
