Filenames are important for a few reasons - you’ve got the usual “Hey, I’d like to find this later.” But you also have SEO to take into account when it comes to digital properties. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. SEO is how Google (and other search engines) find the results that will best serve the searcher. Without SEO-friendly filenames, people will not be able to find relevant images in Google image search. In addition to this, having SEO-friendly filenames boost our search engine rank for that page or story. The more we do to optimize our content, the more people we’ll reach.
Alt text is the sister of SEO-friendly filenames. Alt text, or alt attributes, is how the code describes the content of an image to a search engine or to a screen reader used by visually impaired site visitors. Alt text is critical for ADA compliance.
Filename Best Practices
Create and stick to a image file naming convention
Use relevant keywords in the file name.
Keep it short.
Words should be separated by dashes.
Example:
This is an image from the Haiti DME. James Dobson Belizaire, Askanya’s head of production lifts banana leaves that cover cocoa beans during the fermentation process in the fermentation and drying facility built by the Askanya Chocolate Factory. Fresh cocoa beans are actually white, they only turn dark during the fermentation process.
Bad filename: 00dksdj.jpg
Good filename: haiti.jpg
Better filename: haiti_cocoa.jpg
Best filename: haiti-fresh-cocoa-beans.jpg
Alt Text Best Practices
Use relevant keywords in the file name.
Keep it short, but descriptive - visually impaired site visitors should be able to visualize the image from the description
Use only relevant keywords, this should not be an opportunity to throw in multiple synonyms. This may result in Google thinking the page is spam.
Example:
This is a picture of a Dalmatian playing fetch with a big purple toy in the
snow.
Bad alt text: nothing
Good alt text: puppy
Better alt text: Dalmatian puppy
Best alt text: Dalmatian puppy playing fetch in the snow
TERRIBLE ALT TEXT: dalmatian dogs puppies wolfhound best games labrador retriever snow winter toys purple toys
